So, organization, housekeeping, whatever you want to call it.
It will soon be new computer time in casa Geoff 738. And I strongly doubt my old machine was optimized. Certainly wasn’t as organized as it could have been.
Yes the sample stuff was on a separate drive. Is that even necessary in the days of SSD drives?
What do you keep on backup drive(s), what stays on the main machine? A Mac mini in my case.
And any other stuff you do to keep things organized and optimized in the Daw world.
Thanks, Geoff

Sorry if this obvious stuff for most here. Been a long time since I’ve had to think about this stuff.
Cheers, Geoff

Not if you have a large enough SSD - internal SSD read/write speeds are faster than any Thunderbolt solution. Now if you have too much sample data for your internal storage that's another question. I keep working sessions on the internal SSD and then move them to my backup drive. The whole time each drive is being backed up invisibly to the cloud via Crashplan. Then: a) Make sure you're running your music apps and plugins in Apple Silicon native rather than Rosetta b) Optimise core usage in Logic, if that's what you're using c) set this to Playback and Live Tracks: support.apple.com/en-us/101975d) Other stuff here: support.apple.com/en-us/HT203930

I run all audio off an external SSD (Samsung T5) I copy the sessions to my iCould (which actually puts it on the internal drive, then copies up to Apple).
I run all my samples off another external Samsung T5.
I am running the m1 Mac mini with 8GB of ram on Ventura using LUNA.
Cheers

Thanks, Geoff I'm on PC these days but my approach is, OS on 1TB nvme OS back-up on a matching 1TB nvme Sample libraries and VI's across 2x supper fast 4TB 7GBs nvme (loading libraries is like switching TV channels - I love nvme's) Audio/Cubase projects on 2TB Samsung SSD Mirror of Audio/Cubase projects on 2TB Samsung SSD. All internal drives in my set-up. When I finish a session I just drag the project across to the mirror drive (backed up) once a week I back up again to a an external Samsung T7 (best to have audio in three places!) The OS can be instantly re-called if I have any issues. I don't back up my Sample/ VI libraries as they can simply be re-installed.

OS/cache/installations on M.2 SSD. Audio files on spinny HDD. (Files are organized in sub folders and I can grab the main folder and drag/drop to backup drives easily)
Backup to spinny HDD and USB thumb drive.

Turn off the Internet when not needed! Only half kidding because my older Mac mini can handle less ITB monitoring latency and more heavy duty plugins when off.
