So - I co-wrote a song with a co-writer I have had some cuts with. She just signed to a new pub company. We finished the song and I felt like it was one that I could handle at home (no super uptempo, chicken pickin'). So - I asked her if she wanted me to build some tracks to save some cost - and then I could bill out to her company for about half the price of what a studio demo would cost. We've had lots of success with getting home demo's of ours cut.
I send out the invoice for $175. A full demo at a studio, paying for vocals, harms and mixing would cost them at least $600. I get a text from her saying that her person emailed her after getting my invoice and said (I'm paraphrasing) "Our company doesn't approve co-writer billing in any capacity - tracks, vocals, mixes, etc."
So - what they're saying is that they would rather pay TWICE as much to have other people do it? If I had cut this in the studio (I have a session coming up later this month) they would have paid without question. This is just another way for a publisher to fuck writers. I'm not asking for payment for writing the damn song - I'm asking for payment for building the tracks and giving you my time at a MAJOR cut rate. Why should I waste my time doing demo's at home? I'll just book twice as many sessions...Ah, but then my overhead is too much and they can't "afford" to keep you. You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.
