I'm curious about how y'all record bass most of the time.
DI? Amp? Both? If DI, which DI box? If Amp, what cab / microphone? Do you have an easier time mixing a P or a J-style bass? If you compress on input, do you do it with a pedal before the amp? Do you place a compressor on the loopback? Or do you use outboard? Or nothing?
Tell me everything!

OG rat>70s SVT>8x10>Blue Mouse (Latvian)>Sebatron VMP>Audioscape Opto (not doing any gain reduction)
I do print a DI these days but don’t use it often

I usually only use the DI if the amp needs some low end help.
ITB it gets the Fuse VCL4 and an L3 if it needs any more reigning in
If too muddy, TDL Nova. If still not sitting right, add some dirt.

As always with recording..... it depends.
Overall, I am a DI or die guy unless its a rock bass where some grit is called for, be it RnR, pop punk, etc.. etc... then much like the previous poster, I am a big fan of a big box/script logo RAT into an SVT.
J Bass or P Bass depends on application and arrangement. Neither is more difficult or easier than the other if the arrangement is good. P Basses do seem to benefit from arrangements where guitars are higher voiced, but like anything, there are tons of exceptions.
P Bass with flat wounds is almost always DI for me.... get some grit out of the pre and hit an LA-2A, RS-124, or LA-3A on the way in. DBX 160XT if some extra thump is needed.
P Bass with rounds or J Bass with rounds I usually dig an LA-2A, Distressor, or 1176 if its a more rocking style.
Music Mans I love an LA-3A.
Sansamp (silver rack unit) and Dark Glass Vintage Deluxe are super useful come mix time. API 560 seems to have been made for bass.

Band recording: amp plus DI, usually favoring the amp. RNDI > 1073 > BAC500. Amp > RE20 or 47 or M49 clone > Sebatron > VComp
Overdub style, is the same but I’ll usually record and edit DI and then reamp.
Mostly Pbass but I’ve got a nice Jazz bass for more melodic stuff.

I recorded amp and DI for years, but often favored the DI with a bit of amp. Mostly these days I use a Useful Arts DI with one of a few compressors, but most often the Purple Action. It's been a while since I last recorded a bass amp.
When I mix I pull of the Tchad Black "Tight bass real" preset on Decapitator and do a could tweaks to that. Sometimes a compressor is added.

Vintage Tube amps / Mics vary - but love using a TGX50 > into a Coil CA70 (or sometimes a Capi Heider 312) / BG2 compressor. Plus a ZOD DI. Often a Lil Labs IBP Jnr to get the phase right between DI and Amp Almost always lean towards the amp sound with the DI tucked under for weight.

I have used various methods but right now for my 4001 Ric I use Aquilar tonehammer DI/preamp pedal into BAE1073 and then thru LA2A clone. It's a pretty much done track. But Ive noticed I can get a pretty nice result also going straight into Apollo with Ampeg SVT in unison. Iused to track bass thru my Hiwatt setup at times, but noticed it's really not worth while regarding where you get with line recording on bass.

Millennia STT-1 > LA2A > HEDD 192 (tickle of tape FX ) The tube DI on the Millennia is the best bass sound I’ve ever had, it really is superb.

Electric bass for me is almost always DI into an LA2A. I might split the signal in the computer and use a bass amp emulation along with the DI. Been looking for a pedal to get the dirtier bass sounds but haven't found one that isn't noisy.

Lately it's been Avalon U5 into Fearn VT-2 then to Burl A/D. Often Pultec to Atomic Squeezebox at mix time.

I have an Avalon U5, I always want to like it, but it has been pulled from the racks as it never seems to deliver the tone I'm looking for. Just wondering what type of music you are recording chumley56? What settings do you use? For me it always accentuated the top end in an odd way.

I typically do DI 90% of the time. The BAE 1073MPF with the bootsy mod DI deliver consistently good results.

Well, I use tone setting 2 quite a lot, but it varies with pickup type, strings and playing style. Most of what I am recording is Americana or alt country for other folks. I am a bass player but I don't record myself that frequently. When I am messing around with my basses, I like the Mesa Subway preamp with my active basses and the U5 with the passives

My current fav is Pueblo OLLA to SA70 clone to SB4001 to 550A pushing 800, then using Ampeg's amp sim or sometimes the Bassman sim in Amplitube 5 (the PA/UAD version has been retired for now). I've also started adjusting my muting on my P bass with the built in Jag mute and another P-bass with muting in the ashtray cover, both just barely touching now, more similar to how I palm mute when playing with a pick, letting more note ring but just taking away some zing. Flats on everything. Really digging the tones.

The DI input of the Tone Skulptor MP5.66 500-series tube pre into a Serpent Splice or JLM LA 500. Whether clean or driven (the 566 has a switch setting the amount of negative feedback to the tube), it sounds very finished.

Millennia STT-1 > LA2A > HEDD 192 (tickle of tape FX ) The tube DI on the Millennia is the best bass sound I’ve ever had, it really is superb. I've found the DIs on most high-end pres to be much better than stand alone DIs. I want to say Jim Williams on the purple site made some point about the available power to DIs through 48V vs what's usually found in a dedicated pre that helped explain why he felt similarly to me. I've never shot out a ton of separate DIs vs. DIs in a preamp, but would love to hear more about the difference in technical terms (without going over to GS). Paging EmRR ... For recording, I'm currently using the DIs on Hamptone's JFET pre. This is especially great as the output tx is tapped for a second output, so I feed through a DIYRE reamp and back to the player's rig. I'd love to have more reamp options as well. recently asked Jeff@CAPI (I like their stand alone DI) about potential reamp with the UTC-esque tx, but got a pretty vague response.

P Bass > Ampeg combo > RE20 > API A2D. Simple and effective and requires virtually no processing aside from a bit of compression, but I credit the bulk of this to the RE20. It just works on bass.

For traditional DI on bass, besides the ZOD, I REALLY like the DI on the 512B's. Used those for years. Loved it as it had the bottom, but also cut. The DI's on the Chroma+ are also very, very nice. Brad did a great job of setting the impedance correctly.

ACME DI is pretty fantastic (the OG green one). I find the DI on the CAPI VP28 Platinum to be really good, too. That pre in general excels at giving things some thud. Really killer on kick.
