Phenomenally musical mind. It's a jazz walking bass concept in a pop format. McCartney's influenced so much of pop music concept's and ideas. Genius. As an aside how much cigarette smoke do you guys think ended up on (in) the gear at Abbey Road? LOL

LOL I really love your description of his playing as "jazz walking bass concept in a pop format" His attack and swing always added more energy to songs, even with an abundance of it already. What an incredibly influential bass player. He didn't just play bass, he composed.....

Do you think he worked out the parts or was it off the top of his head? LOL Personally I think he wrote the parts beforehand.

I'm 100% shure he brought the parts home and worked on the bass lines, I heard him say that in an interview.

It's funny how Macca frowned on learning about theory, yet he wrote like he knew his theory very well. Just goes to prove it'a all in what you hear...

I bet we have all known musicians like McCartney.....(not as famous, but some very talented)
people who can play any instrument and soak up and integrate any style or form of music and spit it back out, perfectly.
All the Beatles worked very hard and I would expect that McCartney worked on his parts. But, I also expect that he came up with a lot of ideas for Bass when Lennon brought in yet another brilliant and unique song idea. Example, the counterpoint bass lines for Dear Prudence. I could picture him initially establishing a very simple walk, and then turn it on its head like he did. "Composing" in the moment

...reminds me, I was just enjoying this video a few days ago (not to steal any of Macca's thunder)...James Jamerson, possibly an early influence of Paul's...

Paul's bass lines have always been great, but don't forget that he isn't a 'bassist' per se, he's an incredibly well rounded musician as a guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, pianist, arranger and of course an INCREDIBLE singer. Jamerson may have the edge as a bassist but McCartney is the whole shebang.

It always does though... and of course JJ was an insanely badass musician.
