Did a session recently where the bass player had a Keeley Bassist compression pedal. Tone sounded great so I looked up the pedal after and saw it's a VCA. The Keeley site had rough att/rel times posted so looking around the only VCA I had close was the Serpent SB4001 (SSL) comp. Dialed it in roughly to where she had her pedal set and I'll be dammed if it wasn't a really awesome DI bass tone. I don't know why I always relegated the SB4001 to bus only and never used it elsewhere. Guess it's time to look around for other preconceived ideas and tear some things up.

Yup. I'll use my SSL style comps (Serpent and AudioScape) on all kinds of stuff from guitars to bass to vocals to....even mix buss.

A lot of people who didn’t live through the 80’s and early 90’s don’t realize the Dynamics, EQ and filters of a LFC with full recall were the stock plugins of the day. The outboard racks were not as big as today and it was just too damn easy to use what was on the board and save it ! Why waste time patching in outboard? On the rough mix? I can just reach for the channel?

Smart C2 is dual mono for this reason. Good on snare and vocals. Yup. I'll use my SSL style comps (Serpent and AudioScape) on all kinds of stuff from guitars to bass to vocals to....even mix buss. I can just reach for the channel? ssl stuff is better than most stock plugin stuff unless you are in ableton with eq8 and the glue. even the ssl plugs that are c200 ports are better unless you hit the peak button in the channel strip compressor. utility bundles like waves renaissance maxx, the sony/sonnox oxford six pack and then oxford elite, fabfilter, and mdweq are much more flexible, cleaner, and aggressive than ssl kit. just the average recording and mix quality has tanked despite more options, both good and bad, than ever.

Got some fun sounds tonight with: P Bass, DI, Quad Eight, Silver Bullet, Stam VCA on insert.
I googled the Keeley stuff for fun and got close to his time constants. Love that guy.

I like VCA comps on drums a lot, or really anything where you want to highlight a percussive nature. Here’s my dumb associations with compressor types:
VCA: snap!
FET: punch!
Optical: smooth!
Varimu: goosh!
Diode bridge: smack!
