Hi guys..
I thought you might like to hear a one mic fits all recording using the BM49!
Great talent but a great sounding mic too!
Let me know what you think!
Thanks to the Guys from The war and Treaty and thanks Joel Taylor for a great song and recording!
Cheers

Great sound Ben. Great talent too - hard to make a mic sound bad with that, but the BM49 sure sounds great. Do you have any clips of it up against the current Neumann reissue for comparison - or better yet, an original?

Hi Bill.
I do have some up against an original, not against the reissue though as the BM49 predates the reissue.
I’ll have to try to find them but they should be on the purple monster!
Cheers.

As someone who hasn't ever had the opportunity to use M49s, but plans on building a pair in the next year, what do you all find they excel at? Please incorporate why you'd reach for it instead of another canonical like 87 or 67, MLA formatting, 500 words or less, due Monday. (I'm sure this has been asked ad nauseum before, but haven't come across it on this site / community.)

(I'm sure this has been asked ad nauseum before, but haven't come across it on this site / community.) 49’s have robustness in the vein of a U47, with a bit more focus. They have a deep low end, but it’s not exaggerated. It’s also a bit more mellow on the top. It’s basically a more neutral, and in my opinion, accurate 47. The U67 is even more neutral and more focused. It seems to cut a bit better than the 49, but it isn’t as open. Want a big solo sax, the 49 is dynamite. That same sax might compete too much with a lead vocal though, cause it’s going to sound big. in which case the 67 might be a better choice. This is why I tend to keep 67s and 49 style mics around. I find they compliment each other.

I wish I'd kept my Blackspade UM-17B and R. The B was a dead ringer for an M49, the R was like an M49 and U47 had a baby.

Robust, huge but calm and controlled. The BM49 is indistinguishable from the original c version of the M49 (my favourite revision)

I got to use one a few years ago and it was such a joy to sing into.

I see there are some component differences per their descriptions. How do those differences change them sonically? Once I’ve got my new studio together I need to get a few more of your mics in here to try out.

The BM49 and the T4 are pretty close. the BM49 sounds like a C version of the M49 and the T4 sounds more like the B. The bm49 uses our BV11-T which is a toroid version of the original BV11 and to be honest; we really love this transformer. The T4 uses the more traditional Dual Bobbin UI type transformer. Over time, we have sold less t4 mics and More of the BM49 as the price point is good and the sonics are just so true to life. We will likely keep moving in this direction as the manufacturing of the T4 is cost prohibitive and doesn't make great business sense any more. cheers. Ben
