Gonna have to say a used 2192 - they seem to be going for around $1500 - $1700.

You think it's similar to the Burl DAC? I've been jonesing for another Symphony for DA.

I haven't gotten near a Burl yet (too afraid of what I might find) but the 2192 was and is still my favorite box. It is truly killer in an utterly analog way. Buy a used one Johnkenn, and if you don't find sonic Nirvana you can sell it for at least what you paid.

It's really good. Love to compare it to the Symphony, though. I really like the workflow I have going now, but I really thought I would at least use the Apollo and plugs on the way in a little - but I literally haven't used it once. Basically, all I use the Apollo for is to connect to the computer and add reverb...oh, and use it as a quad for my UAD plugs. That's the only thing that's keeping me from selling it and replacing with the Symphony - I'd have to buy a satellite quad...and actually, I think I'd have to add a Thunderbridge to be able to externally clock the Symphony AD with the Burl...So, it's just cost prohibitive for me. I'm just gonna wait a while to see if anything comes out...Surely, there's gonna be some new converter/clock tech coming out soon enough.

Saying that, read some great thinks about the Audient ID22. Got me quite Interested. Yeah its a lot cheaper but the specs look pretty good. Also using the Burr brown AD and DA chips. I've owned it. It was excellent...but the GUI and touchscreen were major pains in the butt. I still think the Symphony was a little better.

I see.. I am using a PC so the Symphony is not an option for me unfortunately I know that electronic devices with touchscreen can suffer from a durability issues but since you have mentioned GUI I guess you were not happy with its functionality/interface side of things? Was it so bad that it was practically unusable or lead to decrease in your productivity?

The DAC on my Avocet is pretty spectacular but I'm interested in hearing the Ross Martin.

JohnkennIf it's only for monitoring..... I'm really surprised no one has mentioned the Dangerous Dbox..... I use the source for my DAC, but the Dbox would offer 8 channels of summing, and I can vouch for the superior quality of the D/A. Also it's $1,500, with a talkback as well. I wish I would had popped the extra $500 and got that, although the Source has been great, but the Dbox has a lot of features and quality for a really great price. If I'm not mistaken I think it can be remote controlled as well, but I'm not positive on that one. littlesicily

When I was shopping for a new monitor control system last year, I checked out my friend's Dangerous Music Monitor ST. It looked and sounded great. The Crane Song Avocet had a few more features that I liked and reportedly had better D/A than anything out at the time…at least in that price point of $3000 >.

You think it's similar to the Burl DAC? I've been jonesing for another Symphony for DA. Hi - sorry to take a bit to get back, I've owned the Burl A/D but not the Burl D to A, so I cannot compare those (for what its worth, I preferred the 2192 to the Burl in A/D, which I did own for about a year prior). Regarding the other things it seems we have both owned, I preferred the 2192 to the Apollo, Symphony, Duet 1 and 2, and Ensemble (and some other less interesting offerings) in addition to the Burl and a Prism Orpheus I demo'ed. I will say I use both the 2192 and a Benchmark DAC-1 for D/A. The Benchmark sounds a bit sterile at first listen, but I find my mixes translate better when I start mixes through it. You would think conversion wouldn't be so personal, but I've found it to be kind of like monitors. Sometimes, some tools just seem to help enhance (or offset) personal tendencies. John, did you end up modding your Apollo via BLA? I noted you had some skepticism around their mods, but also have a real willingness to go for it in order to match your goals. I ask because I ended up in a similar place with the Apollo - had hoped it to be a turn key solution (and have enjoyed the Unison offerings) but found the so 2192 notably superior, it is hard to use anything else. Indeed DAC is pretty similar to monitors, some like them colored and pretty, some like them flat as can be and not flattering the least bit. I'm the type where I like everything to be flat, when it comes to monitoring I mean. Anytime I've tried something that offered more than just what was coming out of the DAW I would always feel like I was missing something when listening on other systems. I suppose that's why I like Dangerous's products and the Avocet..... it's great conversion, but very true. Benchmark is like that too I believe, although I havn't spent extensive time with them, but I remember they seemed pretty similar to pristine conversion.
I'm still in the camp of if I had it all to do over again I would had spent the extra $500 and got the Dbox because of the features and summing. I do love the Source, it's simple, and it's conversion is solid. Avocets, I looked into them, just couldn't swing it at the time, but they are incredible and have a lot of features and functionality.

Doesn't Fred Forssell make a discrete JFET DAC? I would give that a try if I had a huge wad of cash. Mastering guys like it, I've heard.
Right now I'm happy with either my Apollo, or my Emotiva DC-1, both of which you've heard. My vinyl rig still tops anything, though.
I am personally really curious about the SPL Crimson, which would double as a lot of things, including interface, monitor controller, preamp, DI, and ADC at any given time, for only $699.

Best DAC for under $3k is definitely Forssell.

I am in the market for a new interface really like the look of the SPL. The Tascam uh-7000 has some impressive specs. Altho both probably don't qualify as the best DAC under $3000.
