Just got the news Richard Davis has passed at 93, this one hurts he was not just a legend, he was a client and friend. Miles, Mingus Springsteen and Van Morrison all were some who were lucky enough to perform with Richard.

As you may well know... Was effectively the Band leader on Astral Weeks.
Sorry to hear this. Didn't realize he was in his 90's. Chris

Chris My favorite RD story other than the tales of Miles, was how he ended up playing with Springteen. It seams Richard had a Rehearsal space above where Springsteen was recording and he kept hearing the bass player downstairs messing up so he comes knocking with his bass and nails it on the first take. When I asked if this was true all I got was a laugh and one of the biggest smiles. One time he walks in and Wes makes me do my Miles impression, he said I nailed it, but even with every othe phrase MF I was to clean.

Oh man. One of the greats..
I transcribed a bunch of his bass lines back when I was studying. Especially his work with Eric Dolphy was a huge influence on me. His interplay with Tony Williams was something else. What a gift to the rest of us..

Not a lot that man didn't do! I didn't know his name off the top of my head, but I know his work.

I just learned that Davis used a pick/playing Bass on the Astral Weeks sessions.
Like another singing voice on that record. Chris

It was’ one of my favorite shows was at the UW Memorial theater, it was a album release party for Ben Sidran ( Jazz pianist but more well known as the producer for many Steve Miller Albums and as a member of Steve’s band). The rest of the core band Richard on bass and Bens son Leo on drums guitars, etc (Leo youngest to ever win the Oscar for Best Score, better known for the stuff he wrote and his godfather Steve Miller recorded when Leo was 14). Danny Abelson brought the Turbosound rig we Brought a Midas that Brian Anderson mixed wedges on Buzz Kemper former Tech dir for Prarie Home Companion was at FOH.

Dig into a couple of those very early album notes, you will discover they were recorded at the original Full Compass by one Jonathan lipp. A bunch of the later before he bought his Mackie and ADATs, just down Washington st street at Smart with Brian Anderson. Ben and Steve met at the UW, here is an interesting fact Steve Miller learned guitar from his God father Les Paul, Steve Continued the Tradition with His god son Leo. Over the years I have joked I should have Named Leo as my son’s godfather. If your a real fan of Ben there is a book or 2 of interviews Ben did with Miles and the like.

I saw Ben Sidran at the Triton Community College jazz festival with I was in high school. Paul Wertico and I think Steve Rodby (both of the Pat Metheny group at the time) on bass.
