This interview with Rick Beato and Daniel Lanois from a couple of months ago is really interesting. I didn't honestly know much about Daniel but I was super impressed with him as an individual. And I found his experiences incredibly relatable. You guys might enjoy this.

Beato's interviews are excellent. He asks atypical interview questions due to his deep musical background (player, teacher, producer). IIRC Ron Carter thanked him for asking quesitons he had never been asked.

Daniel has so many fantastic nuggets in this interview.
"If you've got a lead vocal it has to command the center of the picture"
Rick asks if Bono has a loud voice and Daniel says his voice has a "beautiful print on the microphone" and explains this phenomenon, referencing Emmy Lou Harris and Roy Orbison. And how important it is.
" If you're good with melody then you get to be good with harmony and on and on and on"
" The enemy of soul really can be stacking too much stuff up on a track and then you lose your way"

I only watched the first third or so.
I know a cousin of his, but they aren’t close. So I got nothing there.
I also spent an afternoon in Grant Ave, but long after he’d moved on. My one and only experience with an M49.
I also used to walk my kid and dog by his Toronto place. The Black dub video above I believe was done there. In any event I did see him outside a couple times and had a couple brief chats. Once was the day after Neil won a Grammy for the album they did together, so Dan was probably in a good mood. Anyhow I said congrats and just intended to keep going, but he actually started asking me stuff. I distinctly remember him asking if I’d seen it and I had to say no, I was putting my kid to bed.
I also have a story about his Firebird but I am sworn to secrecy on that one.
Ok, thé Beato interview. Lanois stresses the importance of good communication to having a good working relationship in the studio. Does he get into any of the more turbulent sessions? Dylan in particular but maybe others?
Cheers, Geoff

No nothing turbulent. Just some references to Dylan making changes and Daniel acknowledging it's part of the process.

I know it's subjective but IMO one of the all time best producers and of course the interview is full of nuggets . Cheers, Ross

What a fantastic interview. If I were an artist, he is one of two people I’d choose to be in the room guiding the process. Joe Henry would be the other.
