What’s your tips and tricks for getting rid of string noise in the mix? Finger picked acoustic. Clip gain individual squeaks? RX9?

Personally I’d say it’s in the playing. No way around that. And regarding some random noises and squeaks are part of the acoustic sound and I feel they are always welcome. But if it’s something seriously disturbing and no way to replay, id probably reach for izotope rx10

I used to use clip gain for this a while back but prefer RX9 these days. There are various ways to do it in RX, but I adopted Sean's method he shared here a few months ago on another thread. Using RX connect and spatial repair, I highlight the area and attenuate in small increments until it sounds good. I use Spatial repair attenuate all the time for all sorts of random fixes. Usually with much less strength than the default settings.

Any luck with Soothe 2? Retracking is not an option.

And I don’t want to eliminate. Just reduce.

Coated strings can certainly help prevent this problem, in the future.

Pat Metheny's "September Fifteenth" (from "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls") is an example of a fenomenal acoustic guitar composition & playing yet the string noise at places is "uncomfortable". Wish they would've done something but guess the EQing would've affected the timbre or feel?

And I don’t want to eliminate. Just reduce. Clean dynamic equalizers and tape plugs. Soothe sounds like plastic. TDR Nova GE and Sonnox Oxford Dynamic EQ sound far better. Tape plugs are amazing for this. U-he Satin studio mode preset using modern tape and hit 0 vu. If that doesn’t work, try a vintage mode one. If that doesn’t work, try a cassette plug. Goodhertz Tupe and Wow Ctrl are cool but more saturators than Satin. Neold Warble is super lofi.

Can you use FabFilter Saturn, sort of like how you can use it as a pseudo snare gate to get rid of the hi hat bleed? I’m not tracking any acoustic guitar, so I have no idea if the Saturn works like that.

Yeah, string squeaks are a problem. If it's me playing on the track then it isn't a problem because I work very hard at eliminating or at least minimizing them while playing. It's a huge part of my practice routine. IMO if the artist complains about them then it's their problem and not mine. If I am doing the tracking session and someone else is playing and squeaking a lot, I bring it to their attention at that stage and let them know there is little to nothing I can do to eliminate it either in the recording process or at mixdown. There are 2 solutions. Either send them home to practice or have me or someone else play the part. THOSE are the only solutions I am happy with. If the artist doesn't care about the squeaks then I don't either. Any noise removal that I am aware of that will fix the squeaks will remove the tone of the instrument. That is unacceptable.

i would use volume automation for the full control.

Volume riding. Cut out parts and use another eq setting like -6 to -10db wide bell at 2-8khz.
It's almost impossible to use an automated plugin, dynamic eq etc so you really need to do it manually.
Usually people doesn't care. I remember last Birdy album had an terrible amount of squeeks which is one of few times it really has bothered me.

I use a Empirical labs DerrEssor for most of the squeaks, plus volume automation on any that still need more reduction.

I ended up doing some surgical clip gain. Worked fine enough for me. Tried the RX9 thing. Bit of a pain.

Older strings can sounds great and have less squeak. Orthodoxy isn't always yer friend.

A de-esser set to 3khz with a 7-11db snip with a quick attack and release can also work.

Elixer nanoweb strings. They reduce string squeak by around 80% in my estimation. I use them exclusively on my Taylor. On my Martin I use D'Addario and live with the squeaks. There are some guitar techniques to reduce squeaks as well, but they're tricky.

I started a thread a few years back asking for advice about the same problem. At first I was in denial.. but I ended up re-recording while focusing on the problem. It made a huge difference. Honestly, I was surprised that I was able to do it. Now that I think of it, even earlier.. when I first started to participate on this site, I started a thread about pedal noise on my piano recordings. I thought for sure it was a mic placement issue, but I've since learned how to control that while playing as well. It turns out you don't have to push the sustain pedal anywhere near all the way down to get the felt away from the keys. Now I don't even think about when I record piano. Ditto re: the Elixer strings (on my Taylor

Low pass filter very deep if you are ok with a very old tone. Almost no highs. Then you could try pumping through an analog channel to grind some harmonics back in if you want top end. Also can try mic the speaker while EQ’d, you may be able to get something interesting with a ribbon mic type thing on there and good preamp . These are sort of last ditch Hail Mary, unless you really like old colored up tone.

Get Rx to do the amount of reduction you need, then copy the plug setting, open it up in Audiosuite, select the squeak areas and apply the plug-in parameters. That way you don’t lose the top end on the entire track, just effecting the actual squeaks.
If you notice it while tracking, have the player run their fingers alongside their nose. Greases up your finger tips and gets rid of the noise. Elixers work but I don’t dig their tone. The Nanoweb is better than the original ones, but I still prefer a regular or coated Daddario.
