I got an email from Jim Dowler today, the reason you can’t buy modules anymore is because Jim is only selling a fully loaded 10 channel Germanium SFMC. 4 groups and 4 Auxes. Suggestions to Jim are welcome for features.

Can you fill the console with the rack 500 olympic Mic pres ? I should have 8 in the end. Almost the full 10 channels...

I got the opposite info coming from Jim, earlier today, pretty cool ! Also, drumsound, about your previous post, there is sum inputs on the console. 1,or 2, it seems possible if not encouraged haha but then there is a finite number of transistors available too I'm told. So don't stack like 5 of them please. Gee... People only think about themselves these days.

I can't believe I'm seriously considering buying a console. I don't recognize myself. What's happening ? Is this the final lethal stage of the GAS ?

Personally they would make a nice side car for tracking but they would be very coloured for mixing and 4 auxes etc. is too limited for me for mixing.

Jim sent me the drawings, I've been dissecting the console since yestarday. So far I love it !
---
My assumption is that the console sound woud mostly come from the input modules (preamp / eq). It's the first thing Jim recreated : maybe because most of the Olympic Studio 1 console colour is to be found there ? But then I don't know jack about consoles in general haha. There might be transformers and components elsewhere in the summing structure that have a big impact on the sound.
Me I'm doing electronic music w/ vocals, so as long as the console is broadband and doesn't sound like a Big Muff, I think I wouldn't mind a bit of colour. My hardware is always adding some, and this what I like so much about it.
---
I've been on the lookout for a centerpiece for my studio. I've been thinking for a long time about the UTA Pyrasum, but there are a few caviats that bug me. I kind of refused to consider consoles for a long long time. For multiple reasons, money, space etc. But a small console for buss level stuff, why not really... The Olympic console could work for me if used it with busses. Individual tracks would be handled in the box and sent to the console. And from there the console would mangle the busses like the UTA Pyrasum would, but with a bit less limitations. I don't know if taht's something you can ask to console designers, but still I could see myself needing a few modifications on my Olympic console, labels, track count, and access to a few more insert points on the back...
Why is the master called remix does anybody know ?
---
Colour me excited, yeah !
That said, the price, if it's what you say it is Paul, well it might shut down the whole console operation on my side. It only takes 5 digits to kill a dream !

It only takes 5 digits to kill a dream ! The master is probably called remix because that was a term often used back in the day when you switched the inputs of the console from mic inputs (during tracking) to remix for...Mixing. The Olympic and early Helios were split consoles, with the a separate section (often called a jukebox is engineer slang) for tape returns during tracking and overdubs. Depending on the console, the jukebox might just be volume and pan, no sends, no EQ. Then when it was mix time, you used the main channels, set to remix, as tape returns so you have full EQ, sends, pans and the big faders.

Thanks for the explanation. It's enlightening to put the layout back into its original context and period. Jim told me that the current layout is following the original very closely.
Remixed or not remixed, colour me VERY interested.

I've considered it yes. I know many big electronic music artists use this console. The Chemical Brothers for example. Not a bad endorsement for what appears to be a fantastic console yes. But it's very expensive. I did the maths a while ago and I can't pay for it.
One could always add the Zahl IM1 M/S INSERT MASTER to a germanium console. The ADT Olympic console rack 500 slots uptop can be fitted with whatever you want. You can put your many Mic EQs in a lunchbox on the side and fit other modules in the console instead.
Me I've been considering fitting the ADT Olympic console with Bereich03 meters for example ! But I've also thought about the Zahl IM1 M/S INSERT MASTER.
I do beat driven music with a twist ; it's pretty rock'n'roll and dirty. The old european gear works well for this. Siemens, Tab, WSW, NTP, Neumann... Olympic. One day I'll put it all online. One day...
