I found this on youtube since I'm in the market for a pair of monitors and I stumbled across this. I know you have to consider acoustics in with this, but the way they have it set up is pretty cool. You can give a listen to the source track first, get an idea of the transients and clarity and start flipping through each different speaker. Some of them I've heard before and I can definitely speak for the Opals in that they are incredible monitors, if you listen to them against the source track you can hear how well they respond and how close to the source they are. In contrast you can discover pretty quickly which monitors smear the low end and lack definition. There's a video of them showing you how they conduct the test's and it looks like it's pretty controlled to me. It's no anechoic chamber, but I kind of like that honestly, you can hear how each speaker sounds in a good room. I'm liking the KRK VXT8's for what I'm looking to spend, somewhere around 1k. KRK has a 3-way monitor called the 10-3 that sounds pretty nice, and I've always wanted a pair of 3-way monitors, but they do seem to lack upper mids and have a hole around 150hz. Anyone have the VXT8's??? soundcloud.com/sonic-sense-pro-audio/sets/studio-monitors

I had series 2 KRK V8's that I hated FWIW. I now have PMC's and am much happier.

I would want to hear them in person. I dont know how these samples cant help but sound like the mic and recording chain? I suppose you can eliminate some really bad ones, but the higher rated and liked monitors in the test sound pretty much the same

jeromemason did u consider building some DIY proAc 100 knock offs? I can dig up the link if ur interested. You know I've had Proacs... and I loved the top end on them, but I guess I'm wanting something a little more agressive? I have a pair of PSI A17m's right now, but I have to sell them, and I like those, but I might be a strong candidate for a 3-way speaker honestly, or something that has that same forward sound. Really I'm thinking a 3-way might actually be how I go. I also have a pair of modified HS-80ms that have OPA2134's burr browns in them with elna similicII's, and wima's. I can get a damn good mix on those, but I need something that has a wide sweet spot, kind of like a mid field..... I want to be able to flip it over to them and get up and walk around you know? I guess I miss the mains from my old studio, soffit mounted Quested's, you flip those babies on and you didn't need to turn it up loud to feel the mix. I might have to go against the grain on this buy.... my mind is telling me to go with something like Proacs or PMC's, but I'm feeling like I need to go non traditional and take a risk. I'm gonna go to VK in Nashville when I go up for NAMM and listen a bit and see what they got.

Monitors/speakers will vary FAR more than the sound of a recording chain.

The mic and chain will impose its own sound on the samples, even if they are pretty neutral. Do you think the mic is going to "hear" the sound the same way your ears do?
I dont believe so, which, by the way, is what sucks about the loss of many store front gear retailers. Unless you are in big musical cities like LA, NY and Nashville, there's very little opportunity to "hear" products in person.
