After my post on clean headroom mic pres, Matt at Iron Age was nice enough to send me a QPP (https://www.ironageaudioworks.com/qpp) to try out. I'm not technical (as everyone here knows) so maybe matt@IAA can chime in telling us a little more about the pres. I was thinking it was more in the vein of an API, but it's not as bright as say a 312. It's - in a word - "realistic" sounding. Like maybe a Hardy pre? I prefer it over my Millennia for clean - seems to have a little more weight and the top is very natural sounding. I'll add more here in the next day or so, but here's a very bad acoustic clip to whet the appetite. No EQ - I would take some of the bottom out in reality. Chain was Gibson J-45 Custom Shop --> Soyuz 013 —> QPP --> Burl AD drive.google.com/file/d/1ydzPSMg4HEI0UQt4qoaW2CaWAZBISKlS/view?usp=sharing

No offense, but I bet your J45 would sound good recorded through a tin can . It does sound really good, I need to try some of their stuff at some point. Really cool company, I follow him on instagram and have been watching the console build.

Sounds brilliant. What mic? And how far away? And where was it pointed exactly? I've been wanting to see how the QPP compares to my A2D. It costs about the same and I'd get two more channels.

I always like how J45s sound recorded, but then when I play them I don't dig them as much. Maybe just haven't found the right one yet. I've always kinda wanted one.

Don’t think I’ve played a standard one that I’ve liked…but the Vintage, True Vintage are all killer. Found this one used at Gruhns. Not sure what yeah - I’d guess early 2010’s. It was a Custom shop with True Vintage construction, but 1959 appointments. Pickguard shape, ceramic bridge, etc. I had never played one with a ceramic bridge that I thought sounded worth a shit, it this one sounds awesome. Just sold my D-28 Authentic that was just a monster…it was by far the better sounding of the two…but the Gibson sounds fine recorded. Anyway - I stopped by Gruhn’s today and played a bunch of Martins. All the Authentics just explode. Projection is so loud. They are still by far the best sounding guitars they make. It’s really great to know that guitars that sounded as good as the one I had aren’t unicorns. I can always get something that sounds just as good. At a price lol. Btw - just the standard $2700 D18 sounded really great. Played two of them and they both sounded better than average. Not so much with the standard 28.

Forgot the mic. Soyuz 013 FET. I love my 013 Tubes on acoustics, they’re the only small caps I have now. Got a good deal on some used ones, will buy some Fets at some point to have more. I did a big review comparing the tubes and fets, I love the tube ones but the fets were extremely close on a lot of sources. More low end in the fets, better definition on the tubes. They just sound a little more finished to me most of the time.

Amazing sounding and feeling acoustics. They record like champs. I have two of the smaller discontinued models, OM18 and 00-17. They get used just as much or more than my 30s gibsons, and that says a lot about 'new' acoustics.

The QPP is in the "312 family" of preamps for sure, because a 312 has three parts: input transformer, op amp, output transformer. But the QPP uses a different input transformer, a different op amp, and a different output transformer. The op amp we use is designed to get more even-ordered harmonics, even when pushed hard, so it doesn't get zingy. The output transformer doesn't have quite the same low inductance as API's, so it does generate some warmth, but not as high into the mids. The combo of the transformer and op amp gives a nice top, with full low end and low mids.
I agree that your J45 sounds amazing!
