Not sure, but somehow I miss 95% of the drama over there. Maybe it's where I go on that site, or which threads I click on. Not sure. But if you go over and then wade into the sewer, there's no doubt you will come away with a bad taste in your mouth. But conversely, as much as I LOVE RGO, the breadth of audio knowledge there is unmatched.

I got invited into some sort of super users private GS years ago. We got some free Flux plug-ins too. I never really spent any time in there and eventually my access got revoked. Well, the explains more than you realize.

Well, the explains more than you realize. It was a weird deal. I never used the free NFR plug-ins and only went into the ‘private’ area a few times. There wasn’t much going on in there, mostly just the moderators talking about stuff. I think they kind of wanted us to be like junior moderators or something. 🤷♂️ I’m not sure if it’s because I stopped spending much time on GS or because I started spending way more time here that they revoked my access. Or possibly they just shut the whole thing down.

I think one of the things JK did right was to not divide the forum by price point, having guys like Chris who is very much on the lower end gear wise, & DRBill and his Altar of Avid on the same page no less same thread brings a balance you don’t see on GS. Some of the high end elitism is laughable when you realize as often as these guys reach for a nice 47 clone they are putting up a 57. The other thing here is everyone realizes we all had to start somewhere, and if someone gets all egotistical the rest of us will call them out.

I’ll admit I still lurk and GS has an incredible base of knowledge, but what brought me here my friend is the simple fact that because of the presence of you, Bob, Tony, Doug, Don, Ward, Chris,JK amongst others I learn something new here even after almost 40 years in pro audio I learn something everyday. I probably could at GS but wading through the BS eats up to much time. The other thing is JK’s tolerance of lighthearted humor and our off topic wandering, there is so much knowledge here that has absolutely nothing to do with the main subject of a thread.

But there is very little here about composing, music for film, post production, high end mastering, music libraries, electronic music, etc. Its great, but its certainly bandwidth limited with a heavy influence in a few narrower directions.

Definitely, let’s add remote and SR, but those are far more specialized areas and ironically where GS rules even if they are lower traffic. In the SR world though I find GS to have a much larger buyer confirmation bias than some lesser known sites. The Remote forum is probably the best, as a tech vs musician / composer the film music composition is out side my ballpark. Most of the mastering guys I trust have left out of the frustration of dealing with the guy who bought an Izatope bundle and now consider themselves a ME.

That's the heart of what (this) community is all about! 1. The more I know, the more I realize I don't know and 2. I learn something new every day This is a great forum, perhaps the greatest pro audio recording forum on the internet now because of that. The people and the attitude is what makes it great.

Hadn't thought about the purple site in quite some time. That was a pretty clear indication that I could live without it. And I've also be ad-bombed by that same site quite a lot recently. So I logged in, found out how to nuke my account and did it. There were quite a few decent people there, but they were shouted down by the mob. I hope those good ones find their way over here.

There are bunch of talented guys I have tried to bring over here, but after either being personally rung through the GS machine or seeing friends trampled they have soured on public audio forums. It’s sad because we are losing so much knowledge. An example a good friend who worked on a number of very well regarded albums but never achieved name recognition popped up in couple of threads to dispel some urban legends about the gear used on some of these projects. Well the collective voices of the internet ran him over because they had an emotional investment in this myths. We had a phone conversation that basically went like this “ WTF Eric, remember that night you stopped in, remember what mic was hanging? That was the take man , I could post notes and recall sheets but these idiots would rathe believe publicly photos and folk lore.”

Really, the only reason I started this site was the collusion and censoring got so bad over there. My goal was just to have somewhere you could have an honest conversation about gear without 15 shills in the thread.

Let’s not forget the gear pimps, some where larger than life and some of the most interesting posters, but here is a dirty little secret 90% of the gear they slagged had very little to do with sonics and more to do with politics. How do I know this, because they were to stepping Shit from us.

It's funny. I've probably banned like 15 people in 10 years...I browsed over there a while back and I saw like 5 of them in the thread I was reading. lol. It's usually the young, passionate, not-smart-enough-to-know-they-don't-know, dying to be recognized peeps that cause all the problems. And it's easier to do when you can just post anonymously. I could be totally wrong, but I find a lot of that comes from these home "producers" that aren't actually doing any tracking...it's mostly beats and production.

We talk about it because it's our passion and hobby - even outside of work. We talk about it because (dirty little secret) we don't just like the way it sounds, we like the way it looks, the "hope" of it making us better and other psychological factors. It's ultimately WHAT you're recording that's infinitely more important than how you're recording it. Great gear gets you there quicker and is hard to screw up.

It’s funny how in the arts how we build of this almost religious attitude to our tools. Even if I pop into the local art’s supply store to pick up a roll of gaffers tape or drafting supplies I see it towards pencils. The thing here is as much as we might gush about the latest and greatest there is a more adult attitude that these are tools and that it is a buisness. Maybe it’s because for a larger group of us are or have done this as a profession vs hobby, and even our hobbiest are professionals in other fields.

I just don't want to be wanted here, only due to my vast empirical and theoretical Audio Expertise.* Chris *On the other hand, I've been told a million times. Never to exaggerate.

I never understood why Jules didn’t go that route. I’m sure most would have still contributed to the general public threads, but it would have been an escape. MAYBE HE HAS🤯 Well I could tell you, but haven't renewed my Life Insurance-Yet. I'm bummed that Didier (Deedeeyeah) is splitting. Thrill came back, after a number of years. In any event, shows the overall "Water Content" isn't always safe to drink. Chris
