I remember a decade ago chasing a nice vocla mic and i tried the TLM103. my gosh that was a horrible mic, so bright. I thought i might have had a bad one so i bought another one and it was the same. So yes lesson learnt and now i sit in the camp of the stay away from TLM103’s. so i guess it was no surprise that the u87 i bought was not quite the lush mic i was hoping for either. I have had a few of those fro early 1970’s models to the AI.
being in Australia we dont get to demo much of anything. So you usually have to suck it up and just buy the thing and if you dont like it then you just sell it off and take the hit. As a result i have had hundreds of mics looking for nice ones that fit my tastes.
So i stumbled across the AT4060 tube mic and thought man thats expensive tube mic for just cardioid. But the made in Japan and being the flagship AT model convinced me to give it a try.
I bought this mic and thought WOW this is the mic i thought the u87 should sound like. All this to ask the question.
so why does the AT4060 get very little love?

Opps pressed the return button dam ipad typing. Anyways i have moved on to bigger sounding tube ldc mics like the SAE48 and the Upton 251.
But i found the at4060 in one of the boxes in the garage and tested it out again last night. Fired up no problems. And wow it just sounds great for my voice. I think i have a nasal push in the lower to high mids and this mic just sits n there perfectly.
Does anyone else use the AT4060? I have no idea what the Mkii version did to change from the first but it sounds fine like it is.

I have had a 4060 for a very long time. Mine has a Mullard in it now. I used it for a while but it fell out of favor to some K47 type mics for my voice. I needed the extra birth of a U47. But, I had a very high and light female vocalist in a couple months ago and the AT4060 was the clear winner against some pretty great other mics. I had forgotten how it sounded. It has a really sweet open top end. Not a huge bottom but for this vocalist, it was just perfect. So glad I didn't let it go. On that session it was the 4060 into a 1073 into an LA2A. Great sound.

I’m a huge fan of AT’s in general and use their ribbons a lot. I actually wanted to buy a 4060 recently as it is a great sounding tuber, but could not get my hands on one. I was surprised for sure to realize they have discontinued it. I cannot see the reason for that.

The AT’s are under rated, a little known fact is that SMART studios used a lot of AT. Granted it’s live, but lately I have been using a lot of the AE4100 and 4055 handhelds and use 4 3035’s on just about anything but drums. Used At about $100 ea plus an $18 Amazon shockmount they kick a new beta57 in the butt all day long. ATM23’s and 25’s on drums with a pair of Sony C535’s on OH’s
The other thing with AT is how consistent they are sample to sample, the first manufacturer to say “ hey we don’t need no stinking matched pairs.”

Just got a nice little vocal off my $100 AKG P120. Comparable to 3035 IMHO.
But not a 4060. LOL!

Same here. I have a pair of 3035s and a pair of 57s. I took the 57s on the road with several bands, so they don’t look quite as good as the ATs, which still work great.

This is why all the mics here live in ziplock bags with those moisture absorbing silica in side a Seahorse Case with cut foam.
