Okay that was a bit vague. Two shootings, different locations, within a few months of each other. The first was at a commercial facility. The newest one sounds like it was out of a home.
So, this hopefully isn’t a trend. But does this happen in your area? Of all the things studio owners/operators have to worry about being held up or have someone shot should be about the last thing they should have to consider.
Hoping that the answer to my query is a clear no.
Cheers, Geoff

Are you sure they didn't just get the Facebook Flash Mob address wrong?

Well there was the guy who walked out of a guitar store with a Les Paul stuffed down his pants a couple years back. I don’t believe he was ever caught.

The first studio I was on staff at had an intern who was killed in a shooting. The shooting didn't take place at our studio, but at his friends' home studio; it was a triple homicide and made national news. My intern was a good kid who stayed away from trouble, but the media (and the cops, for that matter) jumped on this really gross/racist "rappers are drug dealers, the kids probably had it coming" thing. It was a pretty shitty ordeal. That was almost 20 years ago, and luckily I can't say I've heard of any studio shootings since. That same studio I worked at got mugged regularly. Nobody was ever shot there, as far as I know, but about once a year some shithead(s) would come in and hold the place up. They'd usually steal something studio, like a PSU for a tube mic, but not the mic (or vice versa). We kept a shiv under the console for self-defense. Glad to say I never had to use it myself, although I *DID* pull it out one time thinking we were getting robbed. But that just turned out to be the studio's ghost do a bit of light haunting. ...and that's a story for another thread

Cheers, Geoff This happened a couple times at our local music store!! Except the dude tried running the same schtick one too many times at the same store and they popped him on effort number three or so.

It sucks but it's a good idea to arm yourself and know what to do, God forbid you ever need to use it.

It sucks but it's a good idea to arm yourself and know what to do, God forbid you ever need to use it. The problem is you can't really use a gun. You can be stopped at an intersection by a big crowd, pulled out of your car and beaten near to death, but you can't shoot anyone. They can destroy your store and rob you but you can't do anything. The young kids that are doing a lot of the car thefts, shootings, robberies, and larcenies know that there are little or no consequences due to the fact that broken windows policing has stopped in America. Pretty soon there won't be stores anymore or you will need an appointment and to present your id at the gated entrance. I'm an urbanite and a very laid back and sympathetic person but it is getting to a tipping point. You have to keep basic law and order. You don't want people getting shot by Zimmermans but you also don't want cops telegraphing anything goes. It's a crazy time. We definitely need better leaders in this part of the free world. That includes parents and politicians. I'm definitely ready for a break from all the useless pop music. That's not helping anyone but Spotify.

Where I live you can either open or conceal carry legally without a permit, and many, many do it. When you have folks open carrying on the sidewalk - and it's quite common - criminals are much less likely to pull someone out of their car and beat them to death. Violent crimes being stopped by citizens in these parts it not super common, but it happens. And the police here do not instantly lock up those trying to help. A few years ago during the summer of "love", we had a couple organized protests bussed into town. The word on the street was there was going to be violence and burnings like they had done in other cities. They were met with a strong police force, in ADDITION to hundreds of citizens that were fully armed with everything from sidearms to shotguns to AK's. Needless to say, nothing happened other than some shouting. They left peacefully. From my perspective, open / concealed carry for normal citizens is a win. There is very little violent crime here due to three things - 1.) almost everyone has a dog or dogs, and 2.) most everyone has a gun(s), and 3.) it's not usual to see someone carrying at your favorite coffee shop, restaurant, church, gas station, etc.. Home / business robberies are rare. For the OP's question : back in the late 90's in LA, there were a bunch of studio "holdups" at gunpoint. For a few years it almost became a normal thing. I knew one studio owner who was physically tied up at gunpoint, thrown face down on the floor and robbed in his home studio. Luckily his family was out at the time. After that he moved his studio out of his house. And I don't blame him. I became very suspicious of ANYONE calling trying to book time. I needed a personal reference before even considering them. I know many who have a 9mm or .45 attached under the console tray / mixing desk right in front of mix position for easy and quick access. In these days, in some areas, that could be a smart move.

I live in New York. Where in all fairness in the old days unless you could handle yourself, you would get your gun taken from you pretty quickly and be out $400. Today is a new paradigm, that is nothing like old school street crime, and I suspect the solution will be outsmarting the young kids or organized squads who are taking advantage of gaps in the system.

That explains your frustrations. I feel for ya. Even your "citizen hero's" end up being prosecuted. I left LA for many of the same reasons, and that was a decade ago. I wish you safety and the best of luck.

Thanks. Most folks are trying to keep cool and not be reactionary. Most of the crazy stuff is with young kids. And honestly even with all of their drama and flash mobs, and raiding stores etc, they aren't going around just shooting people like the 80s. And most of them are pretty soft, just kids without parents trying to be noticed. I guess it could be worse.
