I have plugin options to last me the rest of my life, but now that I'm digging in on some more hardware for hybrid mixing somewhat, I'm curious what is out there that may be off my radar. I know there is the Vertigo Sound VSM-3 which I will never be able to afford and there Culture Vulture has been arond a long while (fairly pricey still but at least attainable), but until the new drawmer unit came out, I hadn't really given it much thought. I did ask Josh about Stam making one and he says next year sometime, perhaps. I am looking for not-subtle things - things like the IronAge Portia Street Stomp and some of the LTL colour modules (I've got Mass Driver and Pentode) are a bit too subtle for me. Bonus points for wet/dry blend knobs, but I can always do that ITB.
I do have a D comp on the way and am looking forward to playing with that.

Silver Bullet of course, although I don't generally drive it to "dirt", it WILL go there if you want - especially the mk2 with three (3) mojo amps. Nice call on the D Comp!! <thumbsup>

The culture vulture sounds nice for subtle drive but sounds like ass for heavier distortion. I’d much rather use a guitar pedal reamped or use a nice tube preamp in parallel.

There will be 500 differing recomendations like there is in every thread of this type but the Acme Opto covers a lot of ground here.

Silver Bullet and Handsome Zulu, if pushed hard enough. Both of which I happen to have for sale at the moment

If you have colour compatible stuff, you need to spend some more time to get some other modules. There are a lot more than just LTLO stuff and a lot of them get VERY dirty.
Also I doubt you'll find anything out there as affordable.
If you want wet/dry mix, check out building a Colour Duo unit.

The Culture Vulture Super 15 is used here - it's an incredible beast. I don't ever use it on guitars, but it is astonishing on almost everything I have used it on. From subtle tube saturation / distortion to explosive tube bias fuzz. Especially great on keyboards, drums, rooms, brass. It's also a glue machine.

(...cough... ahem...) ART toob MP's Love those boxes. From the little "DI" ones to the racks. Not really a great mic amp... but distortion? Hail Satan I've fried so many things with 'em... Feel like yeah you could drop $2k on a culture vulture or $300 on an ART box and get to about the same places. There! I said it! If 'ya wanna get really crazy the Gamechanger plasma boxes are nuts. Had one on loan for a while, really hated to give it back. They make a pedal and a rack box too... highly unique. Run drums through there and you'll either fall in love or get scared & run away... gamechangeraudio.com/plasma-rack/

The Silver Bullet is a wonderful box and gives you Bax eq, air, Neve and API style pre amps. It’s better than a Culture Vulture but it’s not valve unless…..you get a mk2. The Overstayer Modular Channel is the craziest all rounder. The HG2 by Black Box is a great tube saturation machine for all things. I much prefer it to the CV. The Vertigo is incredible but very expensive.

You guys must all be rich!! I did forget about the Black Box Designs box but that’s way more than I can prob drop on something like this.
Is there a list anywhere of all the companies that make Colour modules? I poked about and found a few but I thought HRK made some but not finding any on their site.
Very curious about those ART tube pres. I def owned one long ago but hated it and sold it. Granted I only used it as a pre

What I find so amazing on the Vertigo is the M/S capability. When distorting sounds, I find myself most of the time wanting to either have more dirt on the mid or on the side. I find choosing one over the other really helps keep the sound not get too washy and lose too much punch.
I wish I could afford one.

Yes that Vertigo Sound VSM-3 box is really stunning.
I've ticked off all my wish list boxes except for a couple of units and one is the VSM-3.
One day :-)

Knif's new Sora looks interesting. Based on the front panel pics it should allow for very precise, recallable dirt on tap (and blendable) but likely way more subtle than an Overstayer unit or Vertigo VSM.
For tracking or mixing I like the RND 542, Density, the POM PYE in 1:1, Louder Than Liftoff's Silver Bullet and Chromas, the new Standard Audio Level-Or Dual, and Foote's Germanium Clip/Sat. I sold my Zulu and kind of miss it, it's also good when you really hit it hard.
Sonic Farm makes great gear too, the Joe C collaboration preamp is probably really fun if you don't need recallability.
Another shameless plug - I may end up selling my LTL gear and the Clip/Sat, as I'm raising funds for something else. If any members here are interested let me know.
