Yeah, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 2tb one for $999 (the 1tb was $979 and the 128gb was $859). It's way more storage than I need (at least for now) but it was kind of a stupid price, and not much more than the base model with 128gb, so what the hell.
I was looking at refurbished models initially, but they were basically the same price or not much less unless it was beat to hell, and with less storage, so I just resigned myself to spending the money on a new, more recent model that hopefully will be supported for a lot longer, since the 5th gen model that I bought does have the M1 chip and thunderbolt. The 4th gen iPad Pro doesn't have the M1 chip, and I suspect that will be an eventual cleave point where Apple decides to drop off support at some point down the road.
I wonder why they're having trouble moving these? They're fantastic devices. I wonder if they're just rolling out the chip upgrades too fast and devaluing the previous products. Reality is I don't think M1 all that different from M2, especially for an iPad. My guess is that the Apple buyers were so shocked by the huge leap from Intel to M1 that now they all think each new upgrade is the same type of leap.
Just a guess.
I agree. It is kind of an insane price. Normal price on a brand new 2tb iPad Pro 12.9 5th gen model is $2099...
Yeah, I think your speculation is correct. M1 was a big leap, but computers and iPads aren't necessarily the same as phones, where people are clamoring to upgrade every year, so I don't think the same enthusiasm was there for the transition from M1 to M2. I kind of suspect that we won't continue to see a new M series chip released every two years like has happened up to this point.
That's why I bought the 5th gen iPad instead of the newest 6th gen one. There wasn't really any appreciable difference between M1 and M2, so why spend all the extra money when you can be just as well off with the 5th gen iPad? They both have the same screen too.
Now I just need to find some kind of a stand for the iPad and a little USB dock that I can plug all of this stuff (MacBook, iPad, Micro 3 HW controller, Stream Deck, SSL UF1/UF8) into.
