Thanks to you all for your remarks. I'll still be coming around here both for the knowledge and the quiet civility of the place. It's just that schlepping gear isn't fun any more. And I'm tired of hearing some of the same old repertory pieces over and over (and over).
I suppose it will get real when some of my mics go out the door. It's not a huge kit by any stretch, but they'll all very good. Truth is I'm not going to need but a small handful. I'm trying to find an excuse to use each one in the coming months to determine what has the most utility for me. It will be a little bittersweet.

Great CV Michael. I didn't realize your role at Lexicon and foundership of Exponential Audio in addition to producing and engineering. Keep your foot on the gas!

As Allan Holdsworth said, they’re just tools like a wrench.

As Allan Holdsworth said, they’re just tools like a wrench. Aye, one of the local studio owners is still running a who knows how old Presonus inteface. They only replace mic's when they fail etc. and outside of the internet bubble most of the engineers, musician's, bands etc. I know don't have any idea of what's available outside of Thomann. Pro audio is pretty much none existent around these parts and the one's that are invested go Neumann, Genelec (or some other super well known brand) then GIK and that's about your lot.
Usually the last people I talk to about audio engineering equipment is audio engineers, it's a pretty short and dry subject.

Part of the pleasure of this (and other) online REP fora is the amount of information, insight, even knowledge we can get here. Especially about other brands and boutique maker, technicians and designers etc.

Especially about other brands and boutique maker, technicians and designers etc. That's why I come here and there's also lot of magic, deep seated wisdom in the posts around these parts. Although again a lot of people I've come across simply do not care, beyond audio engineering and basic repairs that's about your lot. I don't like using cars as an analogy but I like cars themselves, I'm interested in how they work but for a lot of people they are simply a means to get from A to B. Same applies to audio equipment, it is just a means to an end.. This doesn't even reflect on their audio work necessarily either, I on occasion speak to a great engineer who does consistently stellar work with a very minimalistic hybrid setup (which is annoying). When I asked them what converters they use, their answer was and I quote "some Focusrite thingy".. Hmm..

Congrats! Take a well deserved break. Thanks much John, but no breaks for me. Just a rebalancing. I was a composer before I began seriously recording and before falling into my tech career. It was always my hope to get back to that earlier version of myself. Somehow I seemed to have developed some skill at making classical recordings, but over time it's become more of a distraction. After this next spring, I'll let somebody else hang the mics and I'll stick to putting notes on the page. Speaking from the other side of the retirement portal than many of you, I can say that many of the things that we do in our professional lives are increasingly easy to set aside once you've been across that threshold for a little while. I always figured I'd be hanging mics until it wasn't safe for me to have the car keys any longer. Also thought I'd continued to pay close attention to goings-on in the music tech world. Other things as well, but I found (to some surprise) that lots of those professional activities just don't have the sense of urgency they once did. At some point they change from things you need to do into habits that interfere with deeper satisfactions. I certainly stay up (a little anyway) with the music tech that helps me achieve my goals. And I certainly don't say goodbye to friends of mine who are still immersed in their professional lives. But it has been interesting to me how some of those activities just fall away.

Well said: one of the things about retirement or transitions is that it affords one the opportunity to consider what is more essential vs extraneous to what you enjoy or want to apply yourself to: in a way you become a distillate of your former self but in a more personally satisfactory way: a more essential you.
Enjoy the opportunity !
