All the usual suspects are here; Telefunken, UA, Heiserman, FleA, GAP, Warm, etc.

Hate to be that person but to bad the missed out on the new GAP Elam251.
Question; wonder if the early TF251 also had an original vintage capsule. Think I enjoyed that mic the most with the cheaper GAP. I've come to realise that I really love Ac701 mics.
That test also acknowledge my impressions of the Upton. It really has something weird going on in the lowmids. Sounded great on drums though!
Flea sounded great. Good balance of open mids and nice lowmid bloom.

The current Telefunken is one hell of a mic for sure. Definitely my favorite of the bunch.
The UA Bock/Upton/Heiserman all tied for second. They can absolutely hang with the Telefunken, just maybe not quite as sweet. Older Telefunken and Flea were both OK, but not really my thing. The Warm was surprisingly good here. I felt like the GAP was the most "different" of the bunch, although it still sounded great.
I'm nitpicking, of course — all of these sound phenomenal and you can make music with any of them.
On a side note, I wish VK would pick a better signal chain than that API/Apollo combo they've been using. I'm going to sound really snobby, but I feel like it's really unflattering on these particular mics & singers.

I think all of these apart from the Heiserman sound meh. The older TFunk sounds okay on some of the sources but not the voices. I heard they (TFunkUSA) reskinned tons of old AKG capsules that the staff took from the Vienna factory when it moved to Hungary.

The acoustic guitar capture on all but the best made (and most expensive) three of these varies WILDLY.

Not doing the mics or singers any favors. Could be any number of things, but it reminds me a whole lot of what happened when I tried recording vocals with a Warm 312 clone + Apollo years back. Too saturated, too much midrange coloration. Not appropriate for vocals at all. This video isn't horrendous or anything, but I know all of these mics could sound so much better.

Elsewhere after around 1100(!) posts... Paul figured out the best 251 is a Ribbon! (Gasp) So let's make sure to get a 44* in the Mix next time too. OK? Chris *Substitute a 4038 for Plush.

*Substitute a 4038 for Plush. You mean Hudsonic ? Somewhere in storage the kid now 18, has a bear named Alistar Plushie, Hudsonic just doesn’t fit. He got the name when I through him in a mic case as extra packing when we evacuated from Ike.

On first listen the Heiserman and FleA really stood out to me. I also liked the UA. Like the original Bock it seems bigger in the low end, but also a lot of clarity on top. Once I set up the new studio I have to see about getting a FleA demo.

Haven’t had a chance to listen on monitors - so just listened streaming through the tv…I thought the Tele sounded bright…but I could be biased because that’s been my experience in the real world. I thought the Heiserman sounded a lot better coming right after the tele. Honestly, the UA was my least favorite I think.

It sounds nothing like a 251 or a 47 or any quality LDC. JMHO, and as always, YMMV.

Perhaps the welcome mat was withdrawn, rolled up and tucked away? I've met him but only briefly chatted. Some here know him very well and might care to comment, pointing to why the UA was so different to his other mics?

Ward I know David very well and talk with him often. At NAMM David and I spent 2 days just hanging out. The UA situation came as a surprise to David but he isn't phased by it. Right now he is busy with other concerns but should be getting back to microphones soon.
UA controls everything about the new Bock mics. They seem to have powerful bean counters and deaf ears.

I own a Bock Audio 251 built on April 16, 2021 (before transferring ownership to UA). Brand new in the box — still unused. I also have an Upton 251 from 2022. My studio is still in pieces (being built). If Darren drsax wanted to invite me to his place in Denver, I can bring them down and we can do some comparisons. ( drsax , I guess I just invited myself over! 😂)

They wanted the name, the association also benifits their own designs and their investment in the Slate.
