Hey all, thank you for your suggestions.
I think I have narrowed down my search to a pair of Soyuz 017 FETs or U87ais (I know to get post 2013 when they returned to the FET). I know the Soyuz is cardiod only, which is fine 90% of the time... anything I do Bluemlein for, I prefer ribbons anyways.
Anyone have experience with both side by side that could chime in? Acoustics, overheads, and vocals would be primary uses.
I know many will say to find vintage U87s, but I've had enough experiences with buying vintage gear sight unseen to make me wary of potential money pits.

I know many will say to find vintage U87s, but I've had enough experiences with buying vintage gear sight unseen to make me wary of potential money pits. I’ve used both extensively. It’d be a tough decision for me. In cardioid I prefer the Soyuz on most voices, it’s much more flattering. But the problem is when I’m tracking vocals with my 87ai, I’m almost systematically using it in Omni, which is where I find it really shines, less of that mid range honk and a nice extended top end and sounds very different from the soyuz. But then you’re very dependent on the room and if your room sucks it’s basically unusable. So if you’re set on using only cardioid or your room isn’t good enough for omni vocals I’d say soyuz.

I know the Soyuz is a great mic, but I have personally not found the U87 flat out "wrong" at any point. Often not the best (which can be said for virtually every mic) but never the worst, and almost always decent. My 87 use has been with vintage models though, so that that as a grain of salt. If I had to choose one desert island mic, it would probably be an U87.

My U87 is the ultimate mic for EVERY situation - it's the source instrument / voice that's the problem.

Just got a pair of Stam 87T’s, based on the praise from some in this thread. Wow. They sound really good. I am impressed. Low end reach, air up top with a Neumann midrange. Less than 2k shipped to my door within two weeks of purchase.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions... took a bit but I settled on a pair of Soyuz 023s. I know... totally not multi-pattern but...
this is a seriously impressive mic, especially considering its price point! Great detail and a very unique character/sound. Its darkness is a great counterpoint to the usual suspects. I was between the 023s, 017 FETS, and a pair of U87ais and decided on the 023s when I heard them on drum OHS.... the top end reminded me of C12s (not surprisingly).... its there but not bright or harsh. Very smooth on vocals, nice on acoustic, but I still prefer an M160 there. 017 FET was also very impressive, but was reminiscent of the Neumann thing and we already got plenty of those.
