I love my Heiserman type-19 on pretty much most things. Oh, if only it wasn't for the blue LED. The blue LED sounds pretty good aswell

I use the Austrian Audio OC818/OC18 as a pair, and have a Beesneez 87. If we’re talking versatility, the Austrian Audio mics can take crazy SPL on a guitar cab, and they handle cymbal bashers surprisingly well for LDCs. I like them on piano too. They’re also light enough to be useful in live sound situations. If I had more of these, I’d definitely use them. For acoustic and vocals I find them a little too transparent, which is why I bought the Beesneez 87. The midrange has an instantly familiar colour, like you’ve heard on a thousand records. I’ve been debating getting a second one, or saving up for the Bu67. My only other LDC is the Vanguard v13, which I can also recommend if you want a tube option. Great on acoustic, and it can be magic on the right voice. Look up Josh Turner guitar on YouTube, he has lots of male and female vocals cut with the v13. If I was going to fly somewhere for a session and could only take one mic? Probably the OC818. you won't regret a BU67. killer mic all around. Though if I didn't have a 47 style tube mic already, it just might not be my first choice. it's not as flattering as either my Lawson or Stam 47 on vocalists usually, so it's not my first call for vocals.

Unless you don't like 414's. Which I particularly don't. I'd rather have one good/great mic. Agree on 414buls but ever try the old silver 414eb? A studio in Santa Fe I did a session at once had a pair and I loved them. Great on drum OH. @ DS - yes, to be clear I was mostly referring to the buls. Although the other more modern variations qualify as well. It's been a long, loooong time since I used a brass capsule EB. If memory serves it was OK. Did the job well for what I was asking of it. For whatever it's worth - I don't think it's the teflon capsule in the buls that is the problem. Stayne at Inner Tube Audio harvests them out of old buls mics to make his mag light mics. He certainly likes em. The capsules that is.

Had a brass capsule 412 sounding pretty perfect for mono overhead the other day.

Serrano 87 is my go-to and what I’ve suggested to friends recently. It works everywhere, gives you very mixable tracks, and is affordable.
The only downside is it takes more gain than most mics, so might not be ideal for cheap interface pres with quiet sources.

If you’re considering an 87 then the Stam 87 T is a huge improvement.

This is such an AWFUL question to have to answer!! To be clear, non-tube, not overly expensive pair (close or matched) LDCs . . . #1 value is the Seranno S87s. @cseranno has magically recreated a very close clone #1 tone but not multi pattern is mics' BU87. WOW . . . I mean, just wow. He should have 500 customers here alone. Also single pattern and beyond excellent, Neumann-Gefell M930s are incredible. the Austrian Audio 818 is what AKG should be making. P.S. #1 legacy and proven reputation and good for business are Neumann U87s. Talk to @chadcox if you are serious about pristine vintage ones and price is no object! I mean, you could always buy U87AIs but they don't have something . . . oh, but they do have the something price tag!

PPS . . . I don't have a stam 87T yet. And I'm gonna bet that's gonna be a game-changer for me.

Now I understand why you Guitarists have lots of Pedals. And guitars. Chris

178 minus 131... Equals 47. Only a (minimum) of that left to get! Chris

Seems we have a millionaire here, lend us $10.00.. He can’t he spent it on another mic. Says you. yesterday morning, outside at the garden . . . delivery guy shows up with a small box. Wife (teacher, off for the summer) says "Let me guess, another mic?" and starts laughing. She knows me too well. So about that $10. Paypal ok? 5% per week for the Vig.

Tlm170, U89 or U87 is unless you can do a pair of reissue 67s or 49s.
89 is my pick but many people prefer the 170. I’m also really happy with an 87 but I’m likely to reach for the others first.

The M269 still sounds modern, 60 years after it came out.
