I've got 4 splices and I gave never *OK, maybe rarely* ever use their 2:1 ratio.

Let me reiterate this call: Who actually uses an 1176 in 2:1 ratio, and for what applications? Me 👋 Vocals and Electric guitar. It’s a nice option to have. I have it on the Stam ADG. |

Using 2:1 grabbed it in such a transparent way and was just what it needed were 12:1 was more aggressive than what I was looking for. Also, in probably the most hilarious moment in Pensado's Place History, Spike Stent is starting to explain how his favorite vocal compressor is the Universal Audio AE and as he says "Do you want me to share my settings?" Herb and Dave were goofing off and never heard him and they all just moved on. I've often wondered that since he uses the AE it was probably 2:1 with the super slow attack but we may never know 🤣 |

Amazingly versatile and inspiring mixer, but he was cut off so often. He indeed uses it at 2:1, in parallel with a few others: Did you use UA gear on Beyonce’s vocals? Yeah, the 1176AE Aniversary Edition. The first time I plugged that in was on like Day One of that record, and it's not left my vocal chain since. Beyonce has such a gorgeous voice, it would seem like you really wouldn't do a lot to it. Well, with the 1176AE I have it set for 2:1, and I love it--love the sound of it. It just brings vocals to life, sonically. It really excites it without it sounding over-compressed, and right in your face. I love that about it. On channel 25 I would have had the Dbx 902 de‑esser, going into an LA2A, on channel 26 again the 902 but going into a blackface 1176 Special Edition, and on channel 27 the Standard Audio Leveler, which I love. I liked the UA plugin at 2:1 for gently contouring vocal peaks and adding some energy followed up by an opto or vari-mu in serial. Been considering a Splice, BAC-500, or Stam to put in front of my RS-124 for this. |
