Unbelievable! This Stam just blew away my mic locker. It’s huge! Well… Unfortunately I’m not a pro singer like you guys. I make a little demo of every mic I buy or borrow though and this sounds like the first one that isn’t just 1 KHz. It goes so deep but cuts through and is sharp but smooth. It’s quite remarkable. That’s comparing it to C12’s, 251’s , U47’s, M49’s, C800G etc. you name it. It’s huge. Like a bigger bolder Soyuz somehow.

Agreed! It was such a nice surprise! I saw you had a video Josh but I didn’t have a chance to check it so it was good hearing it fresh and being blown away with no preconceived notions.

That is always nice as videos and even reading posts can definitely shape our opinions ahead of time. I'm glad you were impressed as well! I had never gotten a chance to use any of the tube modded 87s so this was a really fresh sound for me.

Most tube 87 conversion’s are still vintagey but this is a whole new sound as far as I can hear. I couldn’t believe how heavy it is. I haven’t unscrewed it yet but I guessing the Sowter is fairly big. I’ll take a picture. His new 251 is the coolest looking modern clone so that’ll be interesting. After timeline teething problems I think Stam are really finding their own feet. And the price is silly for what you get.

Well, sometimes things live up to the hype so I think you're safe with this one! It definitely is a heavy mic. VERY impressed with Stam quality!

It's a tank, for sure, but gives my wimpier stands the sag. Gotta bust out the big gun stands for Stam mics. I've heard that Stams tube 87 is in the C800 family?

It doesn’t sound like either an 87 or a C800G it is own thing but I think that was a selling technique for rappers. It sounds better than both to me. And it’s less than a grand.

It sounds better than both to me. Any thoughts on using a pair for drum overs Paul?

so I was all about these on electric guitar cabs until I got a BU67 - then I thought about selling my 87T.
stragely, the BU67 didn't make it on a single guitar pass with my tracking session today, but the 87T did. rethinking my recent dismissal of it. haven't found home for it on vocals yet, but I don't expect to get a lot of mileage out of it on screamers.

I have a deep voice and I thought it was going to miss me completely like a C800G but it was the best I’d ever heard my bassy rumblings. It added octaves above and below eq wise and just made all the classics sound nasally and narrow by comparison, Good to hear it works on Guitar cabs, I expected it to work on bass cabs and drums plus the acoustic sound on Josh’s video is wonderful.

Wonderful Paul! Sometimes I like overheads in dual omni. Any chance you or someone else tried these mics in omni?

Wonderful Paul! Sometimes I like overheads in dual omni. Any chance you or someone else tried these mics in omni? Not me not yet. I was checking the mic some more today and it isn’t like anything else I’ve heard in my locker. Such a huge sound without being boomy in the slightest, great mids/top mids and a Neumannesque top end. I hope Stam continue the level of quality they’ve been achieving. I used to be a little dubious of them but every thing I’ve heard is so good. My next unit is the stereo “Fulltec” with mids built in. Wonderful.

I heard there is all a mod available to smooth the top if desired. I love it as it is but if you want it smoother.....

I heard there is all a mod available to smooth the top if desired. I love it as it is but if you want it smoother..... I finally performed the mod on mine. It's just a resistor swap. First impression was that I preferred it to the stock version. Kind of a similar effect to lowering the impedance of your preamp. A little fuller, more relaxed sounding overall. The output was lowered too, which I like.

Just the knowledge that I won't be able able to sell it one day without disclosing that I personally modded the mic lol. Seriously, I haven't used it enough yet to truly judge. Here's a before and after that I shared with Josh Seawell yesterday. Hope that helps. The mod dropped the output maybe 4-6db? I may have over compensated trying to match the volume.
