Sounds bloody awful. Makes every vocal sound worse and does nothing for instruments, the bass fuzz is nasty, yuk. Sorry Peter it needs a mk2 with warmth and a sweet top end.

I was kind of hoping the heritage unit was going to be a faithful (to the extent possible) "clone" so that I could offload my cl1b and take advantage of the ridiculous inflated prices, but looks like I'll have to hang on to it for a bit longer because there just doesn't seem to be anything that is sonically close.

So sad about the tubesessor. However, there are still many optos out there for great prices, that are not a CL1b, but are still fantastic - like Buzz Audio opto comps, and of course, the Audioscape Opto.
As to Heritage Audio, their 609a diode comp is a winner and at a reasonable price. It is different enough from the Audioscape D comp to warrant having both!

QUOTED FOR TRUTH. also.... I'm happy with the one Tube-Tech CL1b and f anything, I'd go after the CL1a. If I were going to do a third party reissue (clone) I would recreate the 'A' not the 'b' Agreed! The CL1A was special…one of the many things I wish I hadn’t sold 🤦🏻♂️ 25 years ago I was hired as a producer/drummer to produce and play on an album for an artist with a decent production budget. He hired in a shed load of fancy gear - and one piece was an early CL1A. I will never forget that compressor - it was literally stunning - so warm and musical - this amazing rubbery envelope and what a vibe. I so wish I'd tried to buy it of the rental company.

When we had zero gear in the Morcheeba studio that was just an old SSL room with a Mackie in the middle and empty racks, we proudly bought an LCA 2b and it was the nastiest sounding comp I’ve ever had. I was using our Alesis more often. They so got it wrong with that pile of dung.

I reckon there isn't one, after all. What about the LCA2a ? short lived and some are does not exist. So, if you know, do tell.

Additional query:
Tube-Tech still have the CL2a. Once upon a time, in a far away land called tape/console/daw-hybrid land, some engineers said it wasn't quite the same as the CL1a as there were limitations due to the shared power supply. Bollocks or potentially correct?
TT wold suggest the CL2a is two CL1a's with the option for stereo and multiple comp operation. And a CL2a is just 17% more than a CL1b - and you have two units. Hmmm

I have used the Buzz Audio Essence, original SOC, SOC20, and the Vortex. None of them are very colored to me, but just a slight sweetening. The Essence is wonderful and smooth. I am not sure I could even call one of them my favorite as they are all so good.

In a well behaved way.

Such a shame about the Tubessor. It’s looking like Audioscape or Stam if you want an accurate LA2A.
Saying that I love my Chandler RS124’s.
