Where I have landed for the time, when I get the money, is on an AEA RPQ2. This is largely because I have a ribbon mic I want to use and want to drive it with a pre that is designed to work with ribbons, but can still work with other mics. I like ribbons, although I only have one, I expect to acquire more in the future. Once I have that, I plan to invest in a dual 1073, perhaps something like the Heritage Audio HA73x2. Ironic that none of these are tube, given my post, but after going back and listening to a Solo610 against a 1073, I see what people are saying about the UA piece - it sounded rather bland to me after all. The 610 (and prior experience with a 737sp) were what was driving my tube preference, but education is a wonderful thing.

A lot of people seem to like the AEA preamps on all sorts of dynamic mics.

Maybe I’d change my mind if I had more time or was using the right one, but I personally don’t really get the tube pre hype. Every one I’ve used just kinda made things brighter.

It’s almost more of a hifi type sound, which I’m usually not really after. The “warm tube sound” thing doesn’t make much sense to me.

Yeah most modern designs and modern clones seam a bit brighter than old school, tend to believe it’s because tubes in general get a bad rap at the extremes. Give the 2 space Demeter a try sometime, early tube second coming before everyone dialed that treble boost into the iron.
