A quick aside: I've wondered for quite some time which is truly better: the Lynx AES 16 PCIe card, or the RME AES HDSPe card. Any thoughts, allbuttonmode and/or thehightenor?

A generally more glitchy system (slightly, not a huge issue) than when running cards inside the computer. More latency than when running cards inside the computer. Noisier than running inside a computer. YMMV, but that was my experience. I was happy to dump the expansion chassis.
I run a few things in an external chassis (Sonnet Echo III) over TB, among them a Lynx AES 16 PCI-E card. I have not noticed any added latency in comparison to when it was inside my old desktop computer. All my Lynx converters and cards run stable at buffer size 32.
It’s not that much Latency, most noticeable with PTHD or HDX when you switch from slots in the Macpro to in a Chassis. I also remember the latency being more stable when using the slots in the computer, ironically the machines I noticed the biggest differences as far as latency with/out a Expansion Chassis where the old AVID approved Dell workstations.

I have a Lynx AES 16 PCI card (not the e version) in a cupboard (you just reminded me about it) used it for a while in a Mastering system. For me it's RME all day everyday when it comes to interfaces (digital connectivity) though I also have a Babyface Pro FS which I use with a laptop and the ada's actually sound pretty good. The reason I only buy RME now, is because I know 20 years from now I'll still be using it as their driver support is legendary plus they write the best drivers in the business imho. Say to answer your question it's RME for me.

I should note that I'm quite happy with my Metric Halo box (ULN-8), but I've considered going the AES card route off and on for the past several years due to the RTL if monitoring through a DAW.

The Metric Halo is very much in a class of it's own. It's one of those products I've never heard a single complaint being made. Definitely equal to RME and I imagine the stock ada's are superior to the stock RME ada's (though I've never directly compared them) I have quite an odd old school digital set-up. Years ago I invested in a Z Systems AES digital detangler. I have my RME AES, Crane HEDD AES and Avocet AES channels all connected to it. It means the Avocet can monitor mixes digitally at the touch of a button pre and post analogue/HEDD FX processing. I don't know if they even make them anymore! The demand has gone, now people tend to have a Mac Mini a single USB or TB interface and work ITB for mixes.

Lynx mixers have less artifacts but is just aes! RME has better drivers and connections for tons of channels. HDX and Dante cards are the other options.
