DAV makes great, super clean, low noise, no hype, no bling bling gear. And pretty cheap, especially for EU buyers. A friend of mine doing a LOT of scoring for film is tracking with these all the time with great result. Now available in 500 format, their 'NO 1' preamp now for just north of £200 (incl VAT). I have no really clean preamp. Bought an API luncbox a while ago, so having a pair of these portable for this price seems like a no brainer. www.davelectronics.com/products.htmAttachments:

Went ahead and ordered a pair today. Meanwhile I just found the dsub connector on my API original lunchbox. Didn't know about that! This makes things very convenient as I plan to stuff it with DIY Color modules while in the studio, and when I need it for location/home recording I'll just unplug the dsub, stuff it with the DAV pres and/or the CAPI VP28 and hit the road. BTW, my Color module kits came today. Really curious about those!

Actually I believe these are on his 'approved' list, among the other top names of clean brands used for classical. Found this article that explains a bit of the history. Designed by an ex Decca (classical label) tech/designer:http://www.davelectronics.com/Studio%20Sound%20review.htm

Anyone got a pic of the insides? If I don't break any © laws I'll shoot one for you when modules arrive, probably today. Emailed them asking about current draw and got fast reply from Mike Hinton himself that the draw is very low, like 30-50mA.

A good chip surrounded by good parts with a good power supply makes a better preamp than most. Roger Nichols once took a $150 RANE industrial installation preamp to a NARAS shootout in Miami and the thing bested all but a couple "name" boutique preamps.

A spacious layout. All socket mounted as well. What's the toggle switch at the bottom for?
Looks like the Audio Upgrades PIP module would plug right in as well as a LME49720 opamp to replace the 1989 vintage OP275 dual opamp.
