It’s really hard to tell what’s what in that mashup, though. Yeah unless you really focus. But those differences will definitely add up once you start stacking.

Yeah unless you really focus. But those differences will definitely add up once you start stacking. Agree I find it helpful to think of the Burl as an AD and a killer discrete/transformer balanced line stage. You’d almost have to add a nice line stage after your mic pre to make it a fair fight.

I’m nerding hard on this. Listening in the car. I clicked the input on the 1073 higher than I normally would because I wasn’t using a compressor and I think it was getting a little crispy. I am a Dum Dum. Funny though, in the car, I actually thought A sounded better and everywhere else I thought B sounded better. Who freaking knows.
By the way A is the Apollo and B is the Burl

It’s really hard to tell what’s what in that mashup, though. Yeah that was my point from the start.... If you have the disposable income or some business reason for having the burl... sure.. keep it... But, there are other places that equity could be of use....especially if you have a mortgage cheers Wiz

By the way A is the Apollo and B is the Burl I'm kind of surprised how much more I liked B. To be honest I was listening to this really wanting them to be no different. I'd really like to hear the same take though. The improvements on B could be just a bit less proximity effect. It was clearer to my ears but was that the converter or other factors?

I was the same distance from the mic…I do think the Apollo is a bit more strident in the 1khz area, 8Khz ish and isn’t as tight on bottom so it blooms a little bit. None of which couldn’t be fixed with eq. Ok maybe not the esses. I prefer the Burl and will most likely keep it just for sanity’s sake. Now off to my next red herring - whether my cheap ass dbx patchbay affects the sound.

Between the two... as that's where I am most sensitive. cheers Wiz

I’m just finding this thread, and I haven’t listened yet, @johnkenn, but I already have a gut feeling about what your signal flow needs…
A PAIR of Sta Levels that you’re running EVERYTHING through — even the final mixbus!!!

By the way A is the Apollo and B is the Burl As I suspected . Having had the Burl for a week, I preferred it over the Apollo too. But that was around six or more years ago. The 2nd Gen Apollo's were honkier than the 3rd Gen. Don't know if spending $1,500 - $2,400 is quite worth the difference though. I'd rather have a Retro 176 and a great outboard EQ.

I go through guitar lust and then pro audio lust…I’ll want something and liquidate to get something else. And whenever I end up with both I eventually feel guitar that I don’t use shit enough.
