I am attempting something new. My revenue stream from my music has all but dried up. I am giving something a try, I haven't really seen anyone do it.. Dark Clouds new tune
On that webpage on my site, you can listen to the whole song for free. You can purchase the tracks for the tune, so you can mix it yourself, overdub, re arrange etc for 5USD. It will be interesting to see how the sales work vs streaming payment amounts I normally get. Here is the contents of the README file people get when they download and unzip. cheers Wiz Dark Clouds by Peter Knight Tempo 120bpm
Audio is recorded at 48khz 24bit.
Thank you for your purchase of Dark Clouds. I really hope you enjoy the song and having fun with the individual tracks from the tune.
How to use
Import all of these tracks into your DAW of choice.
Adjust faders and pan to taste. EQ compress mix go nuts!
Overdub your instrument for the solo.. sing backing vocals.. replace my vocal on the track, chop up the arrangement etc. Try different reverbs..go for it!
I have included midi files for the drum and bass as they are virtual instruments.
PS as a bonus I have included the Mastered Final mix of the song so you can compare it to what you come up with.
I give you permission to use this song and the tracks I recorded for educational and fun purposes. Not for any commercial purpose. Any problems shoot me an email at wiz_oz@dodo.com.au
Cheers and enjoy
Peter

Really cool idea. Definitely targets a more engaged fan from a time commitment standpoint as versus passively listening but that’s probably the best way to build your base in today’s market, especially if you subscribe to the “1000 True Fan” theory.

That’s a really good move. I’m doing something similar with my drum sample libraries. I do a mixture of mixes and styles and also clean stems for people who can mix properly or are learning. I am putting new songs with my Son singing and friends on Bandcamp because I refuse to give the music away on streaming platforms. I may put some stems on there for mixing and remixing. We may not make big bucks but I’d rather that than make it worthless.

100% Paul. Good call on BC and foregoing the complicit devaluing of handing Spotify anything. I still will not subscribe to that app. My wife is a proper writer and she would rather make less than partake in the devaluing of songs that mean a lot to her, to us. Let the chasers chase what they will never catch

wiz_oz@dodo.com.au www.peterknightmusician.comPersonally, I'm starting to become convinced the only way left for me to get my music to a wider audience is to start Youtube channel. I have an absolutely superb band (really great musicians) and the whole project is starting to feel like a dinosaur, like a medieval re-enactment show! People don't seem that interested in live bands anymore in my part of the world, the drinks in the bars are too expensive (so they're relatively empty venues these days) and unless you're putting on a huge hi tech show 5 guys on stage playing their instruments to a consummate level is .... boring! The way forward is a Youtube Channel for me, I teach music (piano, drums, singing, guitar and bass) songwriting and production for a living these days and so it seems to me a Youtube channel for me is a natural step, I offer fun educational videos in exchange to people checking out my music. I see it working for some like Mary Spender who seems to be earning quite good money and other artists too. The industry has reached the end of the road for great bands and world class artists, this current system is never going to produce a Pink Floyd, Beatles, Bowie, Led Zeppelin etc. It's all wall to wall individual pop artists now that dominate. Fortunately, I'm established so I'm not under pressure to make money from music, but it would be nice to have a wider audience and through my recent observations and having been gigging around a major city this past year a You tube channel looks to be the way forward for me. I salute you for your creative thinking Wiz.

I hope you can find ways to make it work for you.

Hey wiz , in your exploration of new avenues, have you considered complementing this strategy with Spotify promotion services? Companies like Songlifty offer campaigns to increase track plays and grow your audience, which might also help with revenue and visibility. They target real listeners, which can boost your streaming numbers organically. Welcome danydich, glad you're here, I'm wondering if you have any more data/info from your experience you can share about Spotify promotion service or Songlifty etc.? Knowing Spotify pays approximately $0.004 per stream on average, (which equals $4 for every 1,000 streams, $400 for every 100,000 streams, and $4000 for a million streams very few people ever see,)......what is the general cost of those promotion services and do they have data to show an average percentage of stream increase verses their promotion cost? Thanks, Mike

They target real listeners, which can boost your streaming numbers organically. It's not just about getting your song out there; it's about building a community around your music. Encouraging your listeners to interact with your tracks could create a more dedicated fan base. In the meantime, leveraging services to buy Spotify plays could amplify your reach. Just a thought. Best of luck with the sales!
