I live in Canada and recently sent the head basket of a 20+ year old L47 to Lawson in Nashville to have the internal shock mount replaced. I have previously had issues with being charged tax and border fees on items that were being returned to me after repair. Lawson filled in the Fed Ex commercial invoice and under "description of goods" put "return and repair/ no commercial value". The value of the package was then listed at $895 for insurance purposes. I received the package and all seemed well. Then 2 weeks later I receive an invoice from Fed ex for $156.
I called Fed ex, they gave me a disputes email address. I emailed... No response. I called again and the agent said she could reduce the invoice to $12 and would email billing and close the invoice. I paid the $12 and thought that was that. Today I get a follow up invoice stating $144 is overdue. I call again and the agent said the previous agent shouldn't have charged me just $12 and the invoice still stands. Does anybody have any experience with this stuff? Do Fed ex usually charge the money and then forward it to the border or do the border check paper work and then bill fed ex? I'm not sure how customs works with these large carrier companies. It's not like I agreed to it before accepting the package. If they had told me in advance I could have refused the package until it got sorted out. It annoys me that they charge a brokerage fee for this mess.

Fed ex scams you all the time with charges.
I’d check with Canada Border Service Agency (cbsa), and ask them what the federal gov’t position is on duties and taxes.

The only thing worse than UPS and FEDEX domestic, is international! Always record any conversations and if they agree to something you want it in writing! So how to deal with them? The only way I have found to successfully deal with either is if Your day job involves a large account, amazing how quickly they solve problems when they realize you have influence over a large amount of shipping and where it goes.

Thanks, I’ll check with CBSA before I call them again and this time I’ll record it!
