I think if you are prepared to own all three controllers, and want to use SSL plugins then it looks not too shabby, bit over priced but most of these devices are.

To me, the linchpin on a system like this (well, specifically the UC-1) would be if you could map the Channelstrip and Bus Comp controls on the UC-1 to one of several third party SSL plugins of your choice. If you could automap it for UAD's version, or Waves's version, or Plugin Alliance's version(s)--I believe all three of those had SSL's approval/endorsement--then you'd be talking. The fact that you have to use SSL's channelstrip or bus comp is a deterrent to the adoption of the hardware. There are a lot of owners of those various plugins out there - people who have already chosen their plugin based on listening to the competition. Don't make them change and abandon their sunk cost into their current system.

With SSL and her sister companies presence in the live world I really wish they would take a lesson from the lightning consoles that sit beside them, crowd source the mapping of plugins! In the world of lighting those vendors who have not either Mapped the 1000’s of different automated fixtures have either bought into a mapping standard by a third party or get this set up an online database I can download profiles from.

I would have thought that with SSL scooping up Harrison MixBus that a universal controller would have been in the pipe. I'm really glad I moved away from all things SSL. Just like letting go of Waves, I miss nothing. If I ever do go with a different controller, it would most likely be the 8424.
