I worked with a new artist the last couple days. She's a soprano but has one of those high and breathy light vocals. I had no idea what was going to work for her so I set up the following: 1) Miktek CV4 with Ari's Flat 47 capsules 2) Wunder CM7GS/M7 3) Audio Technica AT4060 4) Alder Audio H44
I had two other guy artist in last week and the CM7 was the easy winner. Kind of surprising, it was the least favorite by a large margin on her voice. The H44 ribbon was surprisingly ok but had too much lower mids for her. The last two were somewhat more close. Arienne's flat 47 is kind of a unique capsule. Doesn't really sound like a K47. It is what it says; a flat 47. No low mid oomph and no mid push. It's sort of reminds me of a tame CK12, in the broadestsense. The final verdict... The AT4060 was chosen by everyone in the studio.i was surprised. I had not found a vocalist that sounded great on it, but she really did. Now it makes me think about a C12 or maybe Bens Phelicity mic. He says it is like a smoother C12, which would make me think it's like a 251. Anyway, the AT4060 with a Mullard was the winner. In this case it surprised me. Really sounds great. If she is ok about it, I might post the song when it's finished.

That and the 4050, are my faves within the AT line. Chris I have a couple 4050s I use on overheads and a 4047 on outside of the kick. They may not be glamorous but they get the job done.

That and the 4050, are my faves within the AT line. Chris I had 3 4050s at one point. They worked just fine but I feel were pretty thin sounding on most sources once my monitoring got better. I finally sold my last one a few months back. I used to have an army of AT mics, I only have a single 4033 and a pair of ATM450s left. I hate the sound of the 450s but you can’t beat them for placement in a tight spot.

Yeah the AT’s are great in my opinion too. I was really looking to find a 4060 lately but they are not really available. But I have for soon a decade used the 4080 ribbons and they have become a staple in my studio. Mainly they sit as my drum overheads, but I use them for guitar amps, vocals, pretty much anything at times. Solid workhorses with outstanding sound. Then I use the 4047 a lot too. On the kick, acoustic guitars, guitar amps, vocals. Tracked mandolins with it successfully a while ago. Great mic. A while ago I picked up ATM230s for my toms, and those too are doing a superb job.
I have always liked the AT as a brand. They are not that known here where I live. But I really fell for the idea of these Japanese quality built workhorses. They are solid and reliable. I have been meaning to pick up a pair of 4050s at some point too.

My lowly AT4040 sounds awesome.
Outside kick. Clean electric guitars. Driven electric guitars. Distorted electric guitars. Bass amp. Fiddle. Aux percussion. Acoustic guitars. Mandolin.
All have been captured in super usable ways with my 4040.
I think Joey Sturgis - an early 2000s metalcore producer - said all the vocals he recorded for about 10 years were on his 4040. And many of those bands were on big indie or major labels for those records.
