Really, really nice. Had a BAE here for a bit and the Sowter (vintage) output transformer sounded almost identical to it. EQ is always difficult for me to assess. Everything sounds like it does the right values. I’m usually just making small moves and use it for tracking, so I’m never pushing it that hard. stam you still have stock? If anyone wants some quick and dirty vocals or guitar I can post.

Nice, .....In (Vintage) Sowter mode does it sound the same as your MK1 with Sowters?

Nice, .....In (Vintage) Sowter mode does it sound the same as your MK1 with Sowters? I actually don’t have that one anymore unfortunately. I’m busted with Stam now lol. But it was really, really good. Yeah - I think it definitely sounds the same from memory. The Sowter and Carnhill difference is pretty subtle on vocals imo. Maybe you could tell it more on drums or something. Just with vocals, I hear the Carnhill as having more top end sizzle.

Yeah - you get a lot for the amount of money it costs. The only issue I’ve had is I had to tighten the nut on the low eq as the whole thing started moving.

I've got one of these too. I can try posting a shootout I did with re-amped electric guitar if I get some time and can figure out how to post audio files.

Hey good people! just received my Stam Audio 1073EQ+ MK2 and its really awesome!!! pairing really well with my Black Lion Bluey. what a colorful versatile chain.Love the saturation I can get. Was wondering about the V/M switch (Vintage/Modern transformer output selection). I know the Vintage is the Sowter Marinair replica and Modern is Carnhill output transformer but its not clear wish one is it when the button is pressed or not pressed. Any help? I would assume when the button is not pressed its the default Sowter? and pressed is the Carnhill option? wanted to be sure. thanks Stam Audio for this masterpiece. I'm so happy. Patrick

Pressed is Sowter.
You should hear a noticeable difference on the top end (roll off) and a tad more low end.
I am glad to read the positive reviews. Will make some 1272's now which for me are super magical.

That’s the way the button insinuates, but I thought I confirmed that after listening.

Hey good people. I just got a Stam 1073eq+ and its amazing.. but still wondering about the 2 output transformer choice in the V/M button. this is what Stam wrote to me. im confused because I tought the Sowter was the vintage one and Carnhill the modern transformer? any comments? thanks Patrick Hello Patrick, I hope you are doing well. When the button is pressed it is for Sowter and unpressed is for Canhill. On another note, Vintage is Carnhill and Modern is Sowter. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you.

Patrick, first I don’t think I have said welcome to RGO. I’m going to be that guy, dose it really matter? I mean it’s reall just lables and do you really care which transformer is which? For recall you’re always going to get that one tone with the switch in and the other with it out. As long as Josh isn’t feeling naughty and decides to reverse the wiring even if you add a ch or 2 or3 or or 8 ( yes some of us have a Neve problem) the switch is going to offer the same options. Besides neither is a Vintage ST Ives ( yes they sound like nothing else).

Let me go up and figure this shit out. I was honestly kindve confused by what stam sent me too…and I completely thought vintage=Sowter (Maranair) I think of Carnhill being brighter on top.

Ok - just looking at it, one would think the button out = vintage. (Sowter) Button in = modern (Carnhill).
About to listen again…if the Carnhill is considered the vintage, i guess he’s describing the Sowter as the more modern one because it’s manufactured and designed later than the Carnhill. That would be pretty unintuitive if you ask me.

Yeah - it's definitely brighter - like a 10khz lift - when the button is pressed.

Hey John send it to SVART have him trace what is what, but like I said as long as Josh is consistent it really doesn’t matter ( Note to Josh yeah at times we have had our differences but a pot luck edition where the switch could be either way would be fun).

Without considering the name of the transformer, the second example “button out” strikes me stylistically as more vintage sounding in relation to Neve topologies. Meaning the vintage Neves always seemed to have a less modern sounding top end in comparison to the AMS Neve stuff. A similar relationship exists between the vintage Neumanns and their new stuff.

Yeah - it's definitely brighter - like a 10khz lift - when the button is pressed. I listened back and forth a few times to samples you made, and I’ll agree with this. The syllables react with a slight more top to them when button pressed in. Could mean not reaching for high boost or compressor later?

It may be time to just grab his MPA. I need (2) more preamps to fill out my 8 input rig.

Button out sounds more modern to me (Carnhill). Sounds great btw. Which BAE did you compare it to? An MP or the full strip with EQ?
