I was looking to maybe pick up a mastering compressor. Anyone compared the two?

From my experience, the SH comp is a Brainworx deal, and they are just not on the same wavelength as slate and UAD. My friend has the actual compressor and the UAD version is nothing like it, no where close. But, functionally it does some pretty cool things.
Now, FGX is kind of a little different, it's mainly for limiting, it offers a Vari-mu style comp before limiting, but you are not going to have a lot of control over things like M/S and creative processing. However, by just placing FGX on your buss and engaging the compressor you can feel that something is just better, similar to UAD's Fairchild. So if it were me, I'd go for FGX and VBC because of the functionality and it sounds incredible. I use VBC on my buss on every mix and there is just something about it that reminds me of my old Manley Vari-Mu, it has that same feeling, dare I say I think I even like VBC-MU better, I'd be lying if I said that wasn't true, blasphemy to some, but I actually like the software better than the hardware, and that's for all facets, sound, versatility, speed etc.
Demo them all would be my suggestion and see what does it for you, everyone is going to give you THEIR opinion, everyone has one and they are all different, find what works for YOU.
Good Luck!

FG-X is still only 32 bits. A.O.M's Limiter/Compressor sounds better than FG-X, I have both. Look here: They offer a cheap one year license that allows you to pay the difference at the end of the year if you'd like to keep it. Slate's promised a new FG-X II for 1 1/2 years now, so don't count on them anytime soon. I've only used the demo of the Shadow Hills and to me, it was brittle, not like the real thing.

I like FG-x...I would go with it over the SHC. Check out the Pro-L from Fabfilter...pretty dang awesome. Actually, I really like the waves one too...L2 I think.
