I just bought a mojave MA-37. it sounds really nice but the out put is low and needs alot of gain. gain almost all the way up on mic pre. it does introduce more noise when pre is turned up that high, what can give it more gain? adding a compressor? or is there a mic pre with real high gain? especially when recording vocals or acoustic guitar,

The AEA TRP2 may be the way to go, though it is really designed for ribbon mics. Also, if you can find a used Forssell SMP pre, I have had good luck with it and tube mics.

Great! While you are trying the SMP, try using the two inputs that do not have phantom power capabilities. what does this mean? one mic pre into the other? The SMP that I have has two sets of inputs. One set of inputs is designed to allow for 48v phantom power. The other set of inputs are not subject to phantom power and I believe Fred Forssell told me that they were a little cleaner and maybe another difference.
