I thought I would put this in its own thread.
I received my BN67 version 2.
Packaging was great.
The carry case it comes in is really very nice.
The mic itself is really quite beautiful. Very Neumanesque. Sitting next to my 1978 U87i it looks part of the same family though the 87 is a little darker looking (Age?) and its a bit bigger than the BN67. The badge , is a personal preference thing... it’s not overbearing.
Power supply is nice, not too big and has a lovely finish on it. Supplied 7 pin cable is long enough without being bulky, and is branded DP stage.
Now, when I went to plug the cable into the microphone.. it was TIGHT... and I mean.. TIGHT.... tighter than a fish's bum.....thats how TIGHT it was...
did I mention it was TIGHT!... 8).
mics when you tested my mic.. did you use this cable that came with it or another one? Because this took an extreme amount of force to get it in..
Its better after putting it in and out maybe a dozen times whilst testing the switches... but it was concerning at first. I can imagine someone having an issue with this..
The mic internally, is built really really well.. with great attention to detail. There is a small piece of what looks like that white packing foam that comes with so much shipped gear nowadays...on top of the tube… I actually rang Ben, and asked him if it was just there for shipping and he said it could stay there and it was rated at 400 degrees....which is fine.
So I fired it up and let it sit for 15 mins or so ... then started the process of listening.
I checked out all the 9 patterns from Fig 8 to Cardiod to Omni and all do what they should.
I then checked out the mic with all its different switch configurations (5 dip switches).
These are listed as
1. Pad
2. Hi Pass
3. S2 Broadcast Mod
4.OLD 269
5. New 67
4 and 5. Old 67
All Off. New 269
It sounds really very nice. Very very nice.
Its quiet.
Now most of the time I record in FIG 8.
The most open sounding variations of the switching are the "NEW" versions... the others have less air and top end.
I did vocal tests on all of them, and found that the OLD versions take EQ extremely well... and was sort of able to match OLD to NEW with PRO Q3 pretty well.
Then I came back today, and did some proper vocal testing... I have the mic set in FIG 8 with the S2 switch on .. in NEW 67 mode and its beautiful to sing through. This would be my goto for vocals....
I have not a great deal of experience with U67s, though I did sing through Toby Keiths 67 whilst in Nashville.. when I came out for the meet up... and whilst that is a few years back now.. it was in my memory and I wasn't suprised by how good the sound of the BU67 was, if its meant to be a 67 it reminds me of that experience.
I has a lovely top end...that my old 87 does not.
Its also a top end that plenty of mics I have used over the years that some cost a lot more than this, some not a lot....and none of them sound like this does.
Its open , without sibilance. Its really quite a beautiful sound.
It does that thing that a great tube mic does. That a lot of the clones, just don't do, or if they do you are fighting it.
Reliability will have to be seen. But I see no reason looking at the build quality to have any worries... I did not remove the head basket to look at the capsule....I don't want to risk it...
It does not come with a power lead for the PSU... but that's not an issue as I have them lying about.. but keep it in mind.. you don't want it turning up and you can't play with it straight away.
Its a great microphone at a fantastic price, especially in USD. I can't think of anything that can compare with it, let alone beat it.
I will get to testing it on acoustic, banjo, dobro, resonator etc and will post back.
My old U87 is pouting in the corner... don't worry baby, you aint going nowhere.... LOL.....
Oh, all testing was done with BAE 1073DMP, which is what I normally plug the U87 into when tracking my voice.
well done mics and all your team I wish you all the success with the BU67 its a great mic
