Hey all, Jess Jackson (pop/hip-hop mixer) recently posted a photo of his “SSL Sigma with custom input module board so that I can slam the needles” Can anybody offer any incite as to how easy this is to do? Can a sigma be given the sound of a 4k with a few simple mods (not to say that’s exactly what he chased). Thanks! http://instagram.com/p/B3c60yqB0h5

I guess I’d think he sends his mix to outboard gear like EQ and compressors with very high outputs that are beyond what sigma IC’s inputs can handle. In that case a custom line-in box could be able to soak it all up, reduce the level and feed the sigma. But it’s not easy to find gear that can handle extreme levels cleanly. I don’t think a SSL 4k could handle truly slamming high output gear directly to line in. Surprisingly my ancient JH110 is the cleanest for me at handling extreme level, so I sometimes use it in monitor mode just to act as a pad before converters. The line-in on it are transformers feeding 741 IC’s I think. I should probably try to figure out how it does it. I’m guessing it’s the whole 600 ohm issue.

I'd like to have both of mine modded so that Bus B outputs are available on the Alt XLR outputs instead of the DB25 Mix B sends. Seems like a strange decision by SSL to not port Mix B outputs like Mix A.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the sigma is not electrically similar to the 4k and will not sound like one.
One of the aspects of the 4k sound was both the thousands of opamps the signal goes through, as well as the vca chips the sound also went through even when not using the automation.

Yeah but if you lined up enough opamps you could probably make it distort like a 4K😁
