OK first off I’m not a fan of using a graphic to solve room issues, I can always hear the sound of the Graphic, be it the smear of cheap caps and a whole bunch of opamps and cheap sliders. For the most part I prefer the precision of a parametric and being able to put the filter where I need to and tweak the width. Even when mixing monitors I would prefer a nice 10 bands of parametric.
Yesterday I pulled the Ashly Protea digital Graphic I put in the gallery across the street. Brought it home to solve the problem, turns out it was bad cheap cables between the remote and unit.
Well playing around with it on the Questeds with no other DSP I found that a couple of well learned busts and cuts came damn close to what I can do. With the parametric in the BSS Blu 80 or Minidrive. Would a graphic be my first choice? No iin actual use you will probably find your using less than 10 bands out of 30 and your probably going to find your using 10 of those filters are being used to build wider filters with a punch of phase issues. Nobody I know of has a true hard by pass on unused bands, but my memory of a rack of Jim Williams Modded Range’s is in the right situation they could solve some issues on the cheap. If the Ashly’s had an AES I/O I would probably be a bigger fan. The Classic KT’s are nice I’m just not as quick on and can always here everything it is doing wrong same with the SQ1 and their various attempts at a digitally controlled Analog ( hate the ribbon controls on the Helix.
The BSS FCS960 was my favorite for years. Till I found 2 very nice Graphics the XTA and the Audient both are based on the KT. In wedge world my favorite is the TDM not as great sounding as the Audient or XTA ( I should send one to JW for some magic) what I love about the TDM are the 3 notch filters on sliders, super sweet for knocking out any feedback that appears during the show so quick to just sweep it out.
I guess what I’m saying is while a Graphic EQ should not be the first step in solving a room or monitor issue it also probably shouldn’t be completely discounted ( find me an old Pair of Augspergers that don’t have a pair of whites with the rotary controls or the single space 2 ch digitally controlled analog White. In the old days Showco used the White’s with sliders ( another favorite).
