I’m purchasing a VSM2 from Spain and im in LA, and reverb says I may have to pay import duties/ extra taxes?
I’ve never bought something from Europe before, the unit is 5500$ and I’m reading VAT is something like 18%… no way I’m gonna pay that. Is that going to be something I have to pay additionally to actually get the item? Does anyone have experience purchasing from European sellers on reverb and what the import/VAT/extra costs are to purchase gear shipped to the US? Thanks a lot guys!

There’s no VAT in the US but depending on the declared $$$ amount, the import code of the item and the country it’s coming from, there may be an import duty. My understanding (and experience) has been that the US is pretty lenient on these things, but that’s no guarantee.
Also, You may get charged upfront, or you may get billed for the duty fee after delivery.

It's usually cheap, particularly from Western Europe. Most of those countries have trade agreements with the US. You can usually visit the import/duties website that feds run and get an estimate.

You need to check with your border services.
If you are incorporated and or have a business number also check if you can import yourself.
I can in Canada and it reduces landed costs a lot.

What will skew the fees is if the shipper acts as the agent and it’s you with fees you agreed upon but never acknowledged by contracting them as shipper.

The seller is paying for shipping, does that shipping service not include getting it from the border to my house? How do I know/figure out what shipping service is going to handle the package once it reaches the states?

On paper I think there's a ceiling over which you might pay something, I think in the $850 range. Pulling that out of my head.....
A friend in Canada just sold something overseas for $5000US, and discovered he has to have a business export # to export something valued over $2000. First I've heard of that one......though I'm now remembering a USPS threshold around $2400 that now requires something else when leaving the US.
All to discourage individuals selling things....one angle.....

I learned anything over $800 will be subject to an import tax unless there is country trade agreement.
On an item just over $800.00 I paid $125.00 import fees.

When I bought the Klark Teknik LA2A and 1176 clones from Thomann I paid 0 additional fees. Granted it may have been below whatever the threshold is.

Yeah I can't figure out what the import duty will be, some online estimate places say 0, other sources are telling me 5%. Not that another 600$ is terrible for a 5500 item but the deal is less enticing and for all I know it could be even more.. US apparently doesn't have a Free Trade Agreement with Spain just mostly South America, very confusing researching this.

You should have shipping, insurance, brokerage fees, duties and state taxes?

Make sure the seller actually deducts the VAT. The VAT only applies within EU countries. Some European sellers knows very well how international trade works and just as many don’t. I end up battling with them occasionally when I buy stuff from UK for example. Also sometimes importing from US to EU is a hassle when the seller don’t know to deduct taxes. All taxes, import etc. are paid at your border. Many companies and ebay etc. though offer nowadays services where you pay everything at purchase and they take care of all hassle.

I'm in US and bought a Fat Bustard from England. Fedex charged me, like, $50 or so for import duty. Not too bad. Another time I bought a pair of 4038's and didn't have to pay any import duties. I don't recall having to pay any duties for the pair of ez1084's I bought last year either. So maybe the fees start when it's over $4K? I don't really know.

If the total of the item(s) is under $800, it should clear just fine. I've bought many, many camera lenses from Japan for less than $800 and have never had to pay import duties. When I first started buying lenses from Japan on eBay, I read up on this a lot. Of course, things change, but I'm still buying from Japan as recently as a couple months ago.
When you go over the $800 threshold, all bets are off - you might not have to pay anything, or you might have to pay something.
