Greetings, ribbon fans.
I have a Cascade X-15 stereo ribbon I've had for years and am always surprised at how much I dig it every time I hang it. After not using it for 2 or 3 years, I hung it for a session last week and it's developed a 60 Hz hum in one channel. I opened the splitter box, but everything looks good. Tried the usual swapping cables, preamp channels, etc. It's definitely in the mic.
Any recommendations for ribbon repair gurus in the northeast US? If not in that area, anywhere else in the US? I know Clarence Kane is in NJ; anyone have any experience with him?
Many thanks, -09

Ulig would be my first choice on this, simply because of turnaround time EnaK second.

Thanks guys, appreciate you thinking of me! While i am thinking of you.....i have a question. i recently bought an older 1940’s dual ribbon microphone. was very excited as it had new ribbons. Original big magnets and in lovely condition. the problem was when i tested it . It had no or very little proximityeffect or low end. which is very different to other plder ribbon mics i have had. after opening it up, i discovered the original transformer was not there but a new small cinemag was there. So the original transformer was 200ohm the cinemag was 150ohm. i did not really like what i heard. So the question is how big of an impact does the transformer have on the sound of the ribbon mic? Cheers

Hey there,
The transformer can have large impacts, depending on the microphone.
There are also other variables potentially at play in microphones of this age ( magnets, the ribbon).
I'd be happy to take a look at it. Shoot me an email or a dm if you'd like to talk further.
Regards
Jon

Update: I finally found a box and got the X-15 shipped out to Jon Ulrigg yesterday. If anyone is interested in the outcome of what was wrong with the mic, I'll update this thread. If not, no worries!
Thanks again for the recommendation; appreciated. -09

Update:
I did send the mic (Cascade X-15) to Jon Ulrigg. First of all, Jon is a very nice person, and his communications were great. It turned out that it needed a re-ribboning, so Jon re-ribboned both motors (stereo ribbon). I've had it back here for about a week now, and it's been in daily use since its arrival. It sounds more "honest" now, for lack of better word. The noise floor is also lower than it was. Very pleased with Jon's work, and this mic went from a mic I liked to a mic I love.
Thanks again, Jon. Thanks again, those of you that recommended him. Now I do, too.
Kind regards, -09

mcirish: It had a loud 60 Hz hum in one side, due to an overstretched ribbon. -09
