Just thought I’d share my experience with my new Adcom 555 with JW mod.
I’m planning a new monitor purchase soon so I upgraded from a stock Adcom 545 to an Adcom 555 with the Jim Williams mod. (Found a good deal on eBay).
The amp is currently powering my humble NHT SuperOnes. When hooking it up I was going yo do my best to A/B between the two, but the day was running late, I was tired and thought ‘screw it’ and just pulled the old amp and replaced it with the modded one. I was expecting to hear a significant difference but without listening to the old one for reference I thought it was going to be on the more subtle side. The type of thing where the differences really stand out over time.
Well…I was wrong. The difference was huge and immediately apparent. The speakers went from dark sounding and having a rolled off low and high end, to sounding HiFi AF! The high end is amazing, the detail is incredible and low end is extended as well, which is amazing for such small woofers. The phantom center is so much more pronounced too. It’s really incredible.
I really can’t believe how much better these speakers sound. The funny thing is they almost sound too good. The NHT’s were my “dirt boxes”. They were my aurotones. They sounded a little muddy and bandwidth limited and they were hard to make mixes sound good. But when you did get them to sound good the mixes translated great. Now they sound too good! Lol
Anyway, I’m super happy. I bought the JW modded Adcom so I could audition some Amphions and ATC’s. So in that usage I think it’ll shine. But I’m not getting ride of my stock 545. I think there’s still a place for it , especially for powering some small auratones or other grot boxes.

I agree with the above.
I replaced all the studios Yamaha PM series amps with Jim William's modified Adcom amps.
555s Main speakers, 545s Aux speakers, 535 headphones. ( Although I recently replaced the whole headphone system with the Behringer PM-16 personal mixers.)
I'm even using a 555 with coaxial speakers for a live keyboard setup.
Great sounding amps.

There’s no reason to keep the 545 unmodded. That has the best transistors in the lineup. You were listening to a bad amp and not your material. NHT make good, disposable speakers for a good price. The drivers are glued in and not replaceable. They’re landfill tier but better than the non Yamaha, not JBL LSR 305 mk II and Kali LP6 V2 stuff at guitar shitter. And you can use a better amp than class d and cheap opamp crap. Current Auratone 5C are good band limited speakers. They would have even more detail with a modded 545. The Fostex 6301 are even better than both. Better drivers and indestructible metal cabinets.

It’s funny though because it’s made me rethink my pending monitor purchase. I’m still buying new monitors, but it’s kind of changed my perspective, and more than a little. Going to have to sit with these for another few weeks to see how mixing comes out. And I may end up with auratones or those fostex’s too.

I have found another reasonably priced amp I might have to have JW dive into. The Soundstream DA1, designed by the guys at Krell built by Stewart and sold by the Guys who gave us the only Class A car amps I have ever seen. Of course seeing the Pair of BEL 1001 on eBay for 5K have me laughing since my 2002 is to MK IV in one chassis and I paid Adcom $😁
