Anyone in the South Jersey/Philly area looking to get together and discuss
our passion over a few drinks?

ENAK for ribbons. They may do other types, but good on vintage ribbons for sure.

Thanks! Clarence and I had multiple conversations many years ago -- great guy! He came from the same RCA division that I now work for.
I should have been more descriptive: I have a tube condenser mic that needs repair. My tech has already done the basics, but the symptoms are sporadic (at best). I need some deep-dive stuff!

And what of cheesesteaks? The important stuff. Chris Well, that depends -- are you a chopped steak or sliced steak kind of guy? Oh, and forget the whole "Pat's or Geno's" debate -- they're both for wankers!!

Can anyone recommend a mic repair shop in the Philly area? Thanks! I know I'm about a year late - but I (Derek) do repairs on the side besides Vanguard and I'm in Hatfield, PA (about 45 minutes north of city center)

More Cheese Steaks too. When i moved out here I was disappointed by the cheese steaks TBH, but i haven't eaten beef or pork in ≈8yrs now, so it could have just been that the chicken was the disappointing part. Also a weird thing - Philly is very into pretzels, something i was not aware of. Reading Terminal Market rules, though. if you're ever in Philly it's a must-do. SO MUCH good food.

I know I'm about a year late - but I (Derek) do repairs on the side besides Vanguard and I'm in Hatfield, PA (about 45 minutes north of city center) Good to know Derek, we need more mic techs! i enjoy it, although i'm not crazy enough to re-skin my own capsules like some of the old guard. maybe eventually, but i've got enough on the plate at the moment! A lot of the repair work I've done in the past is on C414B-ULS and TLII, which are some of my least favorite mics in the universe to work on. I actually just did two posts on it on our site because we designed and published a 3D print file for the switch covers that AKG decided we didn't need anymore for an incredibly ubiquitous mic www.vanguardaudiolabs.com/akg-stopped-selling-switch-covers-for-the-c414bsso-we-designed-a-new-one/and the pulling my hair out that was replacing those thrice-cursed custom switches that AKG used up until the newest model: www.vanguardaudiolabs.com/repairing-difficult-mics-the-akg-c414/

You do realize you are implying that Harman actually improved a product 😁 To be fair, they improved those switches, which are some of the most miserable bits of engineering I've ever had the misfortune of repairing. And i'm including my own foibles in that comparison. out of all the 414s i've heard, Ray Kennedy has a brass capsule C414EB that is an absolute treasure. The EBs, IMO, rule the roost in that herd of product variations!

Honestly knowing Harman I’ll bet the only reason they changed it was the off the shelf switches they upgraded to were cheaper. I have never known them to make something easier to work on as a motivation.
