Lot of people like them, I didn't. I had a VLA and a VLA II. I thought they had a cloudy vibe to them and I didn't jive with them. I imagine that some mods could clean it up a little, and someone just posted a thread about modding one here...

Doesn't Jim Williams do a mod to these that essentially turns them into an LA2a-sih sound alike?

I guess when I say that I didn't like it, that's a bit harsh. For me, space is at a premium. If I had a wealth of space, I would have kept one around for when I wanted to give something a bit of a haze. @$200 or so used, it's a good enough inexpensive option to have available, but I don't see them as very flexible or an only comp. type of option. If it would be your only piece of outboard (obviously not for you, but others possible reading), I would opt for a nice plug in over the VLA.

Stock it's really not that bad. I agree that it's a bit cloudy. JJ audio does some serious mods. Broken into the different levels. They even mod the compression circuit so it becomes a lot faster. No longer starved plate. After mods it hangs with anything out there. I'm sure you can do some serious damage Tony.

I've got a stock unit that I still use. I like the way it sounds. Mine sounds pretty clean actually.

It's one of my go to, beat the piss out of something parallel buss compressors stock. I've also found uses for it on bass a number of times.
I've considered modding it a bunch of times, just have never gotten around to it.

I've got the vla and like it very much.
the 2 areas where it falls down a little for me is it makes things sound a little bit smaller and it doesn't cope with fast transients real well. put a limiter in front of it or chain ch1 into ch2 and it can sound really smooth.
I have it parked on a parallel vocal buss and think it is brilliant there.
