I guess Neumann still has a patent on it? Is there nowhere in China that one could do a run of them for "private" use?

...Chunger of "Matachung C12" fame on the GroupDIY has made a very concerted effort to have an OEM Chinese body revised for his own tooling/manufacturing purpose, to be available as a donor body for U87, U67 and M269 clone builds...extra attention was painstakingly paid to matching the critical dimensions of the original 3-layer headbasket mesh, the most critical aspect of the body contributing to sonic character...this process has been both time consuming and frustrating for him, but the initial run has been completed and are in the process of being shipped from China...kudos to Chunger for his dedication to the DIY community! ...this will be the most practical and affordable option (prototype pics below)...they will be available soon from his webstore: store.studio939.com/...of course there will always be those that have to have perfection: groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=56425.0Attachments:

Nice! I could definitely see myself getting into this stuff on GDIY...but man, am I the only one that finds it hard to find stuff on there? Even like the build threads and stuff...you go here to order this, but then you have to go here to order that...oh, and this only gets you this and blah blah...it's just confusing for me. I think I just need to commit to something and then ask for help.

it's more intimidating at first, then you learn mouser and digikey a bit, and you start to see the patterns, JK you may have a good opportunity with your patchbay and cables to get some soldering chops together, it's cheap, low risk and high reward, most importantly it's fun. you'll be able to solder a pcb together really easily after putting a patchbay together.
as far as projects are concerned, anything Chunger puts together is pretty much turnkey, and has amazing visual documentation, it's really hard to screw up, and if you do have trouble, guys are so cool and helpful it will inspire you, i was one of the first to build the C12 clone, i ran into trouble, matador(co created with chung) walked me through the whole thing, i learned more through that experience than anything else i've built to date.
There is something very satisfying about building your own piece of gear and hearing a spectacular result.

Though I feel it is important to mention that this chinese body is a tiny bit bigger than "the real deal." As a result, the head is a little bit bigger, despite being the correct 3-layer sizing/orientation. I'm not complaining, though. I've been waiting for it to come in stock so I can start my U67. I already have the tube.
