I snatched up a Stam SA4000-5 MK2 a month ago, seduced by the sweet sounds of AccessAnalog's X-Logic and Smart C2. But holy hell, the Stam didn't blow my mind like the X-Logic. Sure, it beat the living daylights out of those plugins, but it never reached the eargasmic "sounds like a record" heights of the X-Logic and C2.
I've been spelunking through the bat-infested caves of Barney's forum, and not a single soul has dared to say the Stam strays far from the original.
Now, the X-Logic compressor isn't some cheap 4k knockoff, but a SuperAnalogue freakshow. Could it be that I crave the SuperAnalogue high, while the Stam is just an obedient 4k disciple? I trust my ears, but it feels like I'm wandering alone in the desert of opinion.
Do any of you twisted audiophiles prefer SuperAnalogue or Smart Research over those Gyraf SSL clones? Are they worlds apart, or is it just me?
Check out the video below. Audioscape and X-Logic go head-to-head, and the Stam and Audioscape are like psychedelic twins.

I came up with an SSL exactly like the one atop that pile in the video. I do not find my Stam Mk. 1 to be that different. The times I've used a Smart it did seem more aggressive than the SSL, maybe a little sexier sounding for lack of a better term.
One note: I don't use auto release. I am almost always slowest attack/fastest release on the master bus.

I am almost always slowest attack/fastest release on the master bus. Well, I'm with you there. I like a 300 ms release and an attack between 1 and 10 ms, depending on the material. So, we're not talking light years apart between units? Interesting. The compression on the Stam feels "lightweight" to me. Sure as hell better than plugins, but the low-end doesn't get wrapped up like in the X-Logic, and the high end doesn't take a backseat (in a good way) like in the SSL. Authenticity to the original? I don't care about that. I'm chasing the same glue Access Analog blew into my ears. Since none of these Gyraf SSL clones seem to copy the SuperAnalogue circuit, I'm considering something snazzier but not wallet-breaking, like the Smart C1LA. I just hoped someone out there had gone through the same path.

If you aren’t completely happy with your SSL style compressor, I always recommend giving the Smart C1-LA a try 👍🏻

The sidechain could be incorrect on the Stam clone or the SSL X-Logic could have some aging parts that need to be swapped out giving it more of a sound.
You need the auto release cushion to affect the transients with the faster release and not pump the tonal material and control your fader movements without pumping horribly.
If you can’t get an ssl bus style comp to do that, you’re better off using a plug. The Glue is still good especially at 16x oversampling and the SSL Native bus comp is okay but the glue’s distortion is only about 1% better and SSL Native is just standard digital comp. I prefer other plugins for the “SSL Bus” type control but these are there, easy, and old school producer stuff.

I did work I was happy with through them all but the Smart C1LA stands out from the crowd to me. There is a clarity, glue and depth I didn't find elsewhere.

copperx - I’ve never had an SSL style analog compressor make me go “wow.” I see them as useful tools. They can be snappy or punchy or add glue but they are fairly plain sounding to my ears. Wow factor for me usually comes in analog gear that works magic on sharp transients and sounds gutsy… and imparts a sheen or tube or transformer thing that is sweet… like the LTL Silver Bullet, Stamchild 670, AudioScape EQPA EQ, Retro STA Level, Inward Connections Vac Rac TSL3, Chandler RS-124, and those types of analog gear. SSL comps are great tools and I use them (particularly on drum buss), but they don’t wow me. I’ve had the Wes Audio Dione for many years. Very useful and sounds solid for an SSL remake. I would expect the Stam SSL to be solid as my Stam gear all sounds excellent. P.S. in the SSL style department, I think the Dramastic Audio Obsidian and the Smart seem to add just a little something to the stereo width and depth while still sounding much like an SSL.

“analog gear that works magic on sharp transients and sounds gutsy… and imparts a sheen or tube or transformer thing that is sweet“
That’s what I’m talking about (searching for !)

Yup… and that is definitely not an SSL comp in my experience. Now… the LTL Silver Bullet MkII with the C slot engaged starts to give the best of both worlds!! Neve, API and SSL vibes working together

Thanks to all for your feedback.
Yes, perhaps I shouldn't have said "wow" but an "oh, that's what I was looking for."
I think will return the Stam, and save up for a CL1A (and there's a current $375 price reduction everywhere!) or maybe skip the SSL altogether and get a Tegeler VTC Vari-Mu. Completely different beast but a Vari-Mu is an actual "wow." I can't spend that much on other units, unfortunately. My only concern is the Vari-Mu doesn't seem as general-purpose as the SSL, but who knows, maybe it is.

You have to bare in mind that you are comparing apple's with pears. If you want the X-Logic clean sound then the X-Logic is the right unit for you. If you want the old SSL console sound from the 80's then ours would be your best bet. No mysteries here, the original desks used 4 discrete DBX 202 VCA's on the E series consoles and 2 of them on the later G series consoles, these discrete VCA cans have a much higher THD (between 0,9% to 1.7%) vs almost non existent on the X logic. This is where precisely the magic happens to my ears. If you want us to put THAT 2002's on your 4K we can and it's at no extra charge when requesting it, you will end up with a cleaner sound but that's not my personal preference nor our clients. I have a couple of very famous engineers as clients that would completely disagree with your statement and were happy to sell the X logic after getting the SA-4000 MK2 as they wanted the old SSL sound back. Subjective taste is what it is and that is the beauty of it. Each to their own!

Thanks for your answer, Joshua. Yes, at this point I'm sure your unit is an excellent reproduction of a 4k compressor. The unit sounds fantastic. I think I can explain myself better. If you listen to the video above, can you observe how the X-Logic unit extends the ambience/reverb of the snare? It's the exact same effect I experience with the X-Logic and C2 on Access Analog. The AudioScape does a similar thing to the Stam, although the Stam sounds more "vibey." But listen that, no matter the settings and the amount of compression, the reverb tail isn't extended to the same extent. Could the X-Logic unit have a different auto-release setting or release circuit than the 4k compressors? To be clear, I'm not arguing about accuracy of the reproduction of the Stam or anything like that. It might be that I prefer the more modern incarnations, and not the original console compressor sound.

I've found Stam to be very close to the originals however it doesn't automatically mean that old analog equipment is subjectively better, you may simply prefer the X-logic and that's absolutely fine.

That might very well be a possibility. I have not spent much time studying the X-Logic circuit and would be interesting to find out. Thank you for this interesting exchange. I will look at my notes and to some reading It looks like in the SuperAnalogue X-Logic there are no electrolytic capacitors in the signal path, which is the same thing that Smart Research claims about their C2 compressor, so probably there are some similarities in the circuit? Obviously I'm no EE.

There is a clarity, glue and depth I didn't find elsewhere. The sleeper that went under the radar was The Rolls Music RMS 755. It’s my favourite ever VCA comp to pair with a Vari Mu bus compressor. It has a super wide bandwidth top to bottom, and a super precise envelope. It makes for a very big 3D soundscape. No mid push and crunch like the Smart units though, but as that’s not my thing, the 755 suits my production goals.
