FWIW TLM 193 is Thee "Family Guy" VO mic, for all voices on it. (AFAIK) Chris TLM 170s are all over the Pixar movies. They just did the whole new cast recording of "Into the Woods" cast recording with them too, with the exception of the actor playing Jack who used a U87.

Maybe the ehrlund mics qualify, too? Non circular capsules kinda makes comparative measuring a bit difficult, but they’re certainly smaller than a 1” cap. Very unique sounding mics. I've always wanted to try those and the the rectangular capsule makers. The extension both high and low on the ehrlunds is really something. In the top end, it can sometimes be too much, but I LOVE what it does in the low end. They’ve also got an exceptional “reach”: mic something from 3 or 4 ft away (or even more) and it will still sound spot mic’d from a few inches. It’s remarkable and wildly unlike anything else I’ve heard. To the point where it’s actually really disorienting at first. that combo of traits makes it a very interesting choice on bass amps, mic’d from a few feet away. Also nice for classical vocalists, esp baritones.

These mics are so unusual sounding that they can really throw off an experienced engineer. They sound nothing like any other mic I’ve ever used, which made for a much bigger learning curve than I’m used to. Ultimately, I love my ehrlund for its truly unique voice amongst my (at this point kinda large) mic cabinet, but it took some time to get my head wrapped around it. They’re probably not for everybody.

TLM170’s are really great mics that work well on anything from guitars, piano, vocals, percussion, brass, strings, etc. And they handle 150dB SPL with no sweat I won’t use anything else on floor tom these days

I tend to go with a U89, but a TLM170 is extremely close. I like that extra bit of thump and smear from an 89 on FT. Well, on all toms actually. see below

The Sony C100 and C80 are also medium-diaphragm mics.

Here's the P120 RAW "one take" vocal clip, that Bob Ohlsson liked... And was kind enough to run through his UA Hitsville Reverb Plug for me. Chris

Glad to see the shout out to the AT4033. They seem to be mostly disliked, but it was my first « good » condenser. It was really the first cheaper LDC, even if it is really an MDC. At the time around where I was it was all U87s and 414s. Out of my budget. I will admit I dont reach for thé AT very often, but I still like it on acoustics.
Cheers, Geoff

I built two of the Microphone Parts S25 kits a few years ago. Really fun and easy project. They use a medium sized Transound TSB-2555 capsule. It's an electret. Both sound fantastic and consistent with each other. Nothing exaggerated in their frequency response; I would call them neutral microphones. microphone-parts.com/collections/microphone-kits/products/s25-microphone-kitCurrently working on a song recorded entirely with just the pair. Can't wait to build more!
