Greetings.
In my "Dark SDC" thread, there are a few mentions of MDCs. I've owned/use two:
Gefell M-295: Insane details that go on forever. Nickel diaphgragm, too. Shure KSM-32: An all-around fave for instrument mic'ing. I'd go so far as to say it's underrated.
But then I got to thinking about other MDCs. As in, there must be others out there other than those two. Please feel free to share your likes/dislikes/experiences.
Thanks in advance, -09

Once you said M295, you could have stopped.

I think the Sennheiser MKH may technically be MDC

I think the Sennheiser MKH may technically be MDC MKH 800 twin, yes!

I still use AT4033’s fairly regularly. I've got an AT3035 that still comes out from time to time, as well. I think it's technically MDC.

AT4050 is medium. I use them all the time on overheads and piano. I've been told they are great on front of kick as well but I have not tried that. Very good workhorse mic.

My fave under $100 MDC on vocals, by a mile... AKG P120 (Black) First clip "Moi" singing the "George" part on Lead 2nd clip Vincent Ricciardi on Lead, singing the "Roy" part. (FLEA 49) Kenny Bronowski/BGV/Guitars. His BGV's on Vintage U87, on both clips. Portions of my Parody re-write of "Handle With Care"/Wilburys. Chris P.S. Tony "Drumsound" on... Drums!

In that category the Shure KSM32 that you mentioned is a sleeper mic. One of my all time favs. It just works, and captures naturally without too much brightness, and takes EQ beautifully. My pair have been here for 20-ish years. Maybe longer. I bought my first one when they first came out

I mentioned it on the small diaphragm thread but the beyer mc834 is medium and really great. I also love the ksm32 and would like to pick one up and compare them. I remember playing a live gig/recording on sax when the ksm 32 had just come out and I was bummed when I saw a shure mic set up and was shocked how great it sounded and "felt" to me during the gig-just the right amount of proximity and fast response but not bright like drsax says. Have to pick one up- Havent played through the 32 or the ksm44 in a while but remember liking the 32 more. Is neumann u89 medium? Love that mic

KSM32s are really great little mics. Fantastic on electric guitar cab, toms, and whatever else.

We had one of the first KSM32s at the old studio, and that thing did nothing for me. We also had a Beyer 834, and I'm STILL bummed out that the boss wouldn't sell it to me.
I've become a convert to the Gafel M295 (thanks Greg)

Mtg umt70s, assuming it qualifies, is great.

The postulated theory: If a 1/2" diameter diaphragm condenser is a SDC and a 1" diameter diaphragm condenser is a LDC then a 3/4" diameter diaphragm condenser is a MDC
The finest of these are the Neumann U89 and TLM170 and the East-Neumann UMT70 IMHO

Teegarden Audio PPC 125... Really great on most acoustic sources. I am a dealer but I own 4 of them because of there utility.

Mtg umt70s, assuming it qualifies, is great. Oh yes. I have a UM70 set up as my “composing” and scratch vocal mic. It will record anything wonderfully. My acoustic guitar scratch rhythm track ends up on the final cut quite often.

Maybe the ehrlund mics qualify, too? Non circular capsules kinda makes comparative measuring a bit difficult, but they’re certainly smaller than a 1” cap. Very unique sounding mics.

The only similarity is the shape. The 44 is a multi-pattern LDC; the 32 is a cardioid-only MDC. Agreed on the observations of the 32; very natural and not too bright. Highly underrated in my opinion. -09

FWIW TLM 193 is Thee "Family Guy" VO mic, for all voices on it. (AFAIK) Chris
