Suppose one were interested in some API bus compression. Should one be more interested in the rack mount 2500 as opposed to 500 series 529? Is there $700 worth of difference?

Not ever having compared them, if one had 2 open slots in a 500 series rack, the 529 might be a better use of money. You don't get the link shaping thing in the 529, but the metering looks pretty cool with stereo output and a separate gain reduction meter.
If you didn't have the 500 series rack, then then saved $700 isn't a huge savings, unless your planing more modules in the future.

When it comes to API, I'll always go with the 500 series. From now on that is . . . even thought my 3124+ still works great. My 2500 hardware is long gone.
What about a pair of 525s? Sure a little more work for stereo but they're all close to matched anyhow
I've considered going this route, but also the CAPI 526

Neither. They kill kicks and cymbals.

Neither. They kill kicks and cymbals. One thing I have noticed about Dan is that you don’t have to guess how he feels about something.

An alternative could be 2x of the Tonelux TX5C, also by the designer of the API 2500.

Definitely misread this title as “API2500 vs $29” and just assumed it was a thread about Waves

Greg go for the Serpent SB4001, I bought and sold both the API 529 and API 2500.. Enough said.! That’s the other that I have really had my eye on. I have both an API 2500 and a SB4001. For mix bus compression, the SB4001 works on far many more mixes than the API, in my experience. The API has a sound and that sound is awesome, but it can sometimes be the wrong kind of awesome for a track. It seems to love EDM/electronic pop and harder rock mixes. Someone else mentioned it kills kick and cymbals... I personally don't find that to be the case with kicks. I think it sounds excellent on kick and on the mix buss, it will bring out the kick and snare in an aggressive way at higher GR. It can kill cymbals if you put it in LOUD thrust, which makes it great for smashing room mics that are a bit cymbal heavy. Everyone talks about it on drum buss, but I also find it to be a "not every situation" piece here.... its good at brining out smack and transients, but not increasing sustain, getting exciting pumping, etc.. etc.. like a Compex, pair of 1176s, or even the SB4001. Again, when its right, its REALLY right, but despite all the different modes, knees, and detector circuits, I dont find it to be as versatile as something like a Distressor. Its amazing on acoustic piano and guitar buss. SB4001 is a little more vanilla, but as a result of that I find it to work on alot more things.
