I forget about this thing all the time...Had a project that I was trying to get some top end sizzle to fit in...tried the old flip the phase and smash a 4khz shelf thing...but it just wasn't working. Demoed the plug and immediately bought. Really, really nice. www.audiothing.net/effects/type-a/

I got hipped to that a few years ago. It's super freaking cool. I have it on today's mix, as a matter of fact. I had a fiddle mic making some noise that didn't get noticed in tracking because the player needed to get gone. So I've got whatever iZitope plugin I have dealing with that, but it was killing the high end. Type A later in the chain to the rescue.

The Dolby Trick preset on Satin is also great if you have that.

GEM Dopamine offers the same type of Type A enhancement as well.

I did a rap record where I created a template that had a few parallel busses and one of them was the Type A. It worked really well if a beat was more dense to get the vocal above it. And I think on at least one the beat was dark, so I sent a touch of it to the Type A bus. You can be quite creative with it.
Those Audothing guys have cool things going on.

How does the Dolby A effect differ to an Aphex type aural exciter?

How does the Dolby A effect differ to an Aphex type aural exciter? an excellent question. Back in the day (and to this day) many audio geeks and freaks felt the aural exciter was an attempt to duplicate the effect.

How does the Dolby A effect differ to an Aphex type aural exciter? They're very different. Aural Exciter adds high frequency harmonics to brighten the signal. Type A mimics the high frequency dynamic pre-emphasis of Dolby A noise reduction from the 1960s. It's an old trick to encode Dolby A without decoding it for a hyped high end. Sounds like a compressed high shelf boost. The Type A plugin sounds great IMO. The mix knob makes it 100 times more convenient than a hardware Dolby A module, which you have to mix in parallel if you don't want the full effect, which is pretty extreme.

I've heard of a Dolby trick for vocals. It supposedly smooths out vocals better than anything. I wonder if this is what the plug does.

I remember using Dolby A for noise reduction.
One of the more inside jokes in "Spinal Tap."

I've heard of a Dolby trick for vocals. It supposedly smooths out vocals better than anything. I wonder if this is what the plug does. It adds a top end sheen. That’s pretty much all I know that it does. I just picked the “Dolby A Vocal Trick” preset and mixed in.

I think there may be more than one "Dolby trick". Top end sheen is the most famous one that I know of. But watch for sibilance. The plugin has a bunch of different presets that I haven't explored. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them smooths out vocals.

Use the Standard Audio Stretch matched pair but only on guitars. They do a thing though.

Here's a DIY method of acheiving the Dolby A sheen effect using Cubase bundled plug-ins (you could adapt it to other DAWs). www.soundonsound.com/techniques/bright-ideaIt also includes a detailed description of how the effect is acheived. Have to say though that the Audiothing plug-in is the easiest way to do it, and at a bargain price! Martin

Curious how this plug compares to Dopamine by Overloud. Anyone have thoughts?

I blew them off when they gave away their API plugin because I was unimpressed... Meaning you were unimpressed by their 550 or you gave it a bad review or something? I also wasn’t wowed by their 550 but I do like dopamine

I also wasn’t wowed by their 550 but I do like dopamine Yeah, I though it wasn't even close to anything with color. It just reminded me of the EQIII in PT. Not that a clean simple EQ is bad, but don't call it an API without fixed frequency points. After that I just never paid attention to them.

When Dopamine first came out, I tried it against TypeA and Satin. At first I favored Satin, but then went with Dopamine. Guys like Jantex were very impressed with it. I still use it on most tracks and busses. It's definitely Overloud's best plugin if you ask me. It's been a few years since I tried the others though.
